My Gynae doc said, "you need a truck of green leafy vegetables" then it can increase the ferritin lever. I think the measurement of ferritin is base on the lab and country. In Australia where I live 15 - 200.
It's not out of range, but it is considered low, especially since I have hypothyroidism. I've read in order for thyroid meds to work properly, ferritin needs to be at least 70. I've developed many symptoms of low iron (losing hair, fatigue, difficulty breathing, feel like every move is thru mud).
Thanks for the suggestions. I don't eat red meat and I think I'm gluten intolerant, but I'll add the rest.
Your level isn't necessarily low, as a normal ferritin level is anywhere from 12-180. Start with an over the counter iron supplement and take 65 mg daily. Wash down your iron supplements with a glass of orange juice.Studies have shown that iron absorption is increased in the presence of vitamin C.
You should also eat foods high in iron. Your diet is important in raising ferritin levels. In addition to red meat, consider adding green leafy vegetables, beans, black strap molasses, nuts, whole grains and beets. Read labels, making sure your breads and cereals are iron fortified as well.
