There are no treatments that will permanently remove the scar but there are items over the counter that can be used to reduce the visible scar, making it lighter in color and less visible. Items such as Neosporin Scarring solution, creams with aloe vera, cocoa butter and Mederma are examples of creams that are used to reduce the visibility of scars. For example, Mederma® Skin Care for Scars, on existing scars, it is recommended to use 3-4 times a day for 3-6 months for optimal reduction of visibility. Another product called Palmer's Scar Serum, Vitamin E, combines a few ingredients that reduce scars like cocoa butter, silicone and vitamin E and that oil is massaged in 3-4 times a day and you may see results in 2-4 weeks.

I started taking MSM for a reason having nothing to do with scarring. However, I have been using it for only three or four weeks I have noticed the scar on my hand (a very old scar) is flatter, softer, paler and much less noticeable. I looked up scars and MSM on the internet and found it was supposed to lessen scars. It really, really works. I have been taking about 1/3 tsp. a day. I also find that calluses on my feel are disappearing and my heels are getting soft. I bought pure MSM in bulk. I think it weighed about a pound. That may be too large a quantity. I think there may be a way to use MSM topically. We can look that up on the internet.
