Cushing's

Hi all,, I recently went to my Primary Doctor because of thei " buffalo humo" on my back and the fact that I cant lose more than 15 pounds,, no matter how hard I try. I have always been in the 130-140- range and in my pregnancy I went from 140 to 212 ,, the last 60 pounds in 3 months!! my hair was falling out and just awful to touch,, I spent hundreds on fancy hair products. I was breaking out even on my back! I didnt do that as a teen,, now my skin is dry! I suffered post partum and severe ADHD ,, or so the doctor said,, I do not have the severe stretch marks though. Also,, I recently have gained most all the weight in my tummy and chest area,, my arms are not skinny though or my legs but they have never been small, I was a Gymnist. My blood test came out with high cortisol 26.5 and high glucose 105 but low calcium, protein and red blood cell count. The Endo I went to yesterday said she thought I was just obese and that was messing up my hormones lol,, my doctor thinks otherwise.. I took the Dex test this morning,, has anyone else had this issue with a Endo?? and does it sound like this is a Cushing's matter like my Doctor thinks?? The Endo thinks not cause I dont have serious strechmarks or severe moon face, but I keep gaining,, I gained 7 more in the last 3 weeks and I am on Atkins and walk 1 hour 7 days a week!! aggh.I am tired,, My back hurts so much as do my joints,, I am so swollen,, my hands cramp up as do my legs. I have this stupid hump which occured in the last 2 years. I am so anxious all the time,, and I have a buzzing kinda feeling,, cant sleep at night,, want to sleep all day lol have to catnap threw out day,, went from 165 to 204 in pat 9 months. dry lips and super dry feet no matter what. Sound familiar??

Hiya-
It sounds like you could have Cushing''s to me. You certainly deserve to be tested for it with complete labwork to start. If the lab work nails it, then MRI's should be performed to try and find the source.

With Cushing's not every person has every symptom, it varies from person to person. But having high cortisol is not normal, ever unless you are on steroids for some osrt of other medical condition.

A lot of your other symptoms sound like classic Cushing's. Especially the anxiety, buzzing feeling, and sleep probs. Also the buffalo hump is classic. Your doctor has it messed up...being obese is a symptom of hormonal problems, not the cause!!! DUH

Extra cortisol will cause that icky "tired but wired" feeling. Extra cortisol can cause you to lose calcium and bone density too.

Some Cushies gain a lot of weight while others don't.

Sounds like your thyroid could be a mess too. The dry feet, lips, and dry hair issues. Since all of the hormones are connected it is very common for multiple hormones systems to be messed up.

Any labs?
Have you had any MRIs yet?

I see that you live in California. So that is good. There are several  pituitary centers there like: UCLA, UCSF, Stanford etc...

Sounds like your endo does not specialize in Cushing's. I'd ditch this one and get thee to a proper neuroendo. Why waste time on one who say's "no, this is not a probable diagnosis" before they've even done the darn testing? That's not a good attitude for a doctor ever.

They have to make the weight comments because we don't know we are heavy - like we are not in agony about looking for a cause. Of course, we are told it is our fault - it is something we have done and it cannot be for an outside reason. When I did a food diary I was called a liar etc. It was just a nightmare.

I was put on metformin too - my glucose was normal and all it did was make me run - and that is RUN for the bathroom. I did not lose a pound. It did take me 12 years or more.

He said what?? lol,, geez thanks right?? what is up with this " fat" thing and doctors??? Ill definately read up on your story. I can see how it takes forever to get diagnosed,, they just want to treat the symptoms and not the reason I suspect,, what good is it if you get fixed right?/ My Endo just wants to give me diabetes meds and I am not diabetic yet lol maybe they like seeing us over n over again wtf is wrong with these so called doctors geez,,, well, Im glad you did get diagnosed and finally got to do something about it before you got even worse,, lets hope I can do the same :)

I showed my pics to a new doc recently and he said oh, in that one you just look fat... so um, in all the others, I looked Cushingoid, that one, fat, so because of that one pic, you are going to dismiss me? And yup, it happened - so yes, it is frustrating.

I have a few pics in my profile - if you read some of my old posts you can pic up on my story but basically I had a couple of tumors and it took forever to get diagnosed.

The *wired but tired* feeling is rather typical of the Cushing's person.

The dexa test is not the most reliable so if the doc uses it as a test of exclusion, go for another doc.

I know many with the disease - and no one has every symptom. It takes a good doc to get to the bottom of it. I had the cyclical pituitary form.

Thank you so much for your response!!! I totally agree with you on that Endo,, She wouldnt even look at my back when I tried to show her my hump and  you cant miss it lol she also would not tell me why I had high Cortisol ;( yeah, Im not on any steroid meds,, no meds to be exact,, I took the Dex test this morning so we will see what that says in a few days,, Its so good to hear that everyone has different symptoms,, I have ALOT of them but not every single one,, Just because I don't have massive stretch marks is not a indication I don't have it lol  I cant stand that wored and at the same tired feeling;( Its awful,, like I overdid caffeine or something yuck. ya,, goin from 145 to 212 in a matter of 9 months was heartbreaking,, I like being chunky,, in fact I want to stay around 155 to 160 but this 204 I am now is too much,, my back aches as do my feet n legs,, Im only 5 ft 3 !! In fact ,,, if I dont do Atkins and walk every day I gain,, I stopped cause of my back and gained 7 pounds in the last 3 weeks aggh,, Thank you for your input so much though.Ill keep ya informed lol
