Meningioma FM area

Meningioma FM area

I have been diagnosed with a meningioma in the foramen magnum about the size of a cherry and it is compressing my spinal cord.

I have probably had this for about 10 years because that is when I started having "pins and needles" in my arms and hands (started in my hands and has slowly worked itself upwards).  In the last five years I have noticed transient "itching/burning" without a rash on my left arm and now in the shoulder/neck area.

My question is whether to have the meningioma removed surgically or go with radiation treatments. I am leaning towards surgery, with the  idea to have it removed before any further deficits occur.  Am I on the right track?

In general, foramen magnum tumors can be a problem because they can cause mass effect on the brainstem or spinal cord.  In younger patients or patients that can tolerate surgery, a resection is generally recommended.  If they are able to get everything, it could potentially be a cure.  Radiation is usually reserved for patients who have significant risks for surgery.  Hope this helps.

Yes, thank you.  Like I said, surgery is what I'm leaning towards.  I'm just very nervous about it.  I have a 9 year old to care for and I need to make sure I can continue to do so.
