17 year old with swelling under arm

My 17 year old daughter has had a swelling in her armpit for several months and it is tender. At one point there was a slight lump there but it is not there now. She says it is tender. You can see visibly that it is swollen more than the other armpit. Should we be concerned? Her primary care physician has referred her to a surgeon that works in that area and says he has an ultrasound if needed. Appointment is another 3 weeks away and am concerned because she has also had sinus congestion for 3 months and a constant headache for over 2 weeks now. Not sure this is all related. Thanks Much!

Dear vtmanitou:  Without evaluation, it is impossible to speculate on what this might be.  Breast cancer in a 17 year old is extremely rare and most breast cancer is not painful.  If you are concerned about the wait to see the surgeon, you might consider calling and asking if the appointment could be moved up.  If not, you might let your primary care doctor know of your concerns.
