Phyllodes tumour

Dear Sir,

My wife was felt pain and swelling and some lumps in her left breast and 2 months back. I took her to a Gyanae consultant. She given her some medicines and suggests some pathology test and some radiological tests. Pathology test was Haemogloben and blood sugar test.In Radiology test she written Breast Ultrasono graphy and Mammography. We gone for all the above tests and the result was normal except Mammography shown that there is swelling in that breast. She gave some medicines but those medicines not helped my wife much, then she suggests us to meet anty Surgeon.
We gone to a surgeon he written so many tests like Pus culture, FNAC test, and some blood tests like TCDC etc and X ray of chest. Again all tests result were found normal. Then he refered my wife to a senior surgeo of my city.
That senior surgeon given 2 injections per day for 7 days and some medicines. This injection has given some relief (lump got about 20% reduced)to my wife but not much.Doctor's opinion was to go for Biopsy. But, he operated my wife's breast and one lump of size 6x6x3 cm(which was rock hard) cut and given for Biopsy.
The BIopsy resuly shows that she has Phyllodes Tumour and not anycancer tendency. The surgeon is telling that she has to go again for surgeory and the total lump should be withdrawn cause that tumour can not be cured by any medicine.

Now, my question is this that can this Tumour may be cured with medicines or Surgeory is essential for this. Since my wife has just gone for one surgeory recently so she is not in a position for another surgeory. Is the treatment going on is correct? This is the fact that she is having some lumps in her breasts till now.

Please help me and reply at the earliest.
Thanking you

M Kumar

Hi there.

I understand your concern.  Phylloides tumor that is of low grade (meaning, minimal metastatic potential or potential to spread) should be treated with a complete wide excision.  Wide excision is necessary to achieve a good margin on the tumor.  This is necessary because if some tumor is left, even if microscopic, then this could result in an early recurrence of the tumor.  Wide excision is usually curative, but your wife still has to follow up every now and then to the surgeon to detect any signs of recurrence (some phylloides tumors can recur even after wide excision).  I agree with your doctor that she may need another surgery to completely remove the tumor and the other lumps in the breast.

I hope her surgeries and treatment will be as uneventful as possible.  Regards and God bless.
