Swollen Lymph Node for over 4 months

Swollen Lymph Node for over 4 months

I have a very large stron family history of breast cancer, especially on my fathers side.  I am negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2.  But 4 months ago I had a breast MRI done and it showed that I had a swollen lymph node under my right armpit as well as nodular in my right breast which as the report says "stability suggests a benign process".  My doctor had told me to go for another MRI last week in which I did and it still showed that my lymph node was swollen.  He suggested that I follow up with my MD, in which I have an appt today.  My question is:  Is it normal for your lymph node to be swollen for this long of a time?  It measures 1.4cm.  Any information you can give me to help ease my thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Dear TILULA1:  Most normal lymph nodes measure 1 cm or less.  Lymph nodes can become enlarged for a variety of reasons, the most common being inflammation or infection.  Enlarged lymph nodes can last a long time depending on the reason for their enlargement.  However, size is not the only characteristic that might be evaluated.  Your doctor, who can do an examination, including evaluation of the lymph node, will be best suited to determine whether this has any suspicious qualities and whether additional evaluation is necessary.

I'd get a second opinion if your sister isn't comfortable with her treatment.
