BREAST CANCER EXPERT FORUM
What is the research?

What is the research?

I know I posed this question before.  I'd like to state it in a clearer manner.  However, japdip did not appear to be too knowledgeable with my concerns and questions.  I would like to have a doctor respond to this who is familiar with, and understands this type of cancer, as well as, is aware of the problems detecting this type of cancer.

I have Invasive Lobular Carcinoma nd Metastatic Carcinoma.  My type of cancer is slow metabolizing the sugars and therefore, a PET Scan did not detect the cancer EVEN THOUGH IT WAS THERE.  My cancer doesn't have a lot of blood vessels which would retain the iron, therefore, the cancer did not show on the MRI EVEN THOUGH CANCER WAS THERE.

Question:
Are there better ways (Newer tests, newer research available) to track my progress since the above tests have not shown the cancer?

japdip please don't answer this but refer it to a more knowledgeable doctor who is on the cutting edge of treatment and/or research.

Thanks

Dear fatcat90:  The simple answer is no, there are not "newer" tests to screen for or follow breast cancer.  Nor is there any one test that works well in all situations.  In terms of screening, the tests are mammogram, ultrasound, and MRI.  Most cancers will show up on one of these tests, though if there is a discrete lump, biopsy may be warrented regardless.  If the disease is metastatic, there are a variety of ways to track progress depending upon where the metastases are.  Many facilities do not use PET scanning for breast cancer.  (Just because it is the newest kid on the block does not make it the best test for all purposes).  Your doctor will be best able to judge what testing would be appropriate for your situation.

My cancer is metastatic, therefore, what are some of the best ways to track progress?  TI had the Invasive Lobular and the metastatic area was on the right side of my breast (arm pit side)  and in the lymph nodes.
