breast reconstruction after lumpectomy

breast reconstruction after lumpectomy

It is now 4 years since lumpectomy, chemo, radiation.  Want to repair damage.  I am 48 healthy.  What is the difference between tram flap and mini flap?  I would prefer not to use
implants.   Can this proceedure  be used instead?

A TRAM flap reconstruction refers to taking the transverse rectus abdominis muscle, which is located in the lower abdomen, between the waist and the pubic bone for use in forming the reconstructed breast.  Mini-flap reconstruction usually refers to use of the latissimus dorsi muscle.  This muscle is a flat, triangular-shaped back muscle located below the shoulder and behind the armpit.  The decision regarding reconstruction needs to be made based on a weighing of the risks and benefits in your particular situation. You should consult with a plastic surgeon regarding the options for surgery and the realistic expected cosmetic result.

If you are looking at options, check out DIEP reconstruction.  It uses the abdominal fat but no muscle.  I had it done in 2004 and am very pleased with the results.  You can get more information on the message board at www.facingourrisk.org.
