Questions about results

My 69 year old mother received this report and has been scheduled for biopsy on June 12.  I'm not sure I quite understand some of the terminology and was wondering if you could provide some interpertation?

"There is an asymetrical density noted in the axillary tail region of the right breast."...
also..."With spot compression, the area persist and appears spiculated and there are suspicious microcalcifications in this location.  1.5 cm in size.

Also, "BIRADS   4

Any help would be appreciated.  This is the first encounter with breast cancer that I have ever had, and I am trying to understand everything, to be able to help my mother understand.

Thank you in advance,
Lynn

Dear Alynn, The report states that there is a density found on the right breast only (asymetrical).  A density found on a screening mammogram is then followed up by the spot compression, to get a clearer picture, the density persisted.  BIRADS is a method of categorizing suspicious areas on mammograms in order to help with recommendation for follow up.  A BIRADS 4 rating means; the area is not characteristic but has a reasonable probability of malignancy.  Biopsy should be considered.  Your mother is doing the right thing having this biopsied, it doesn't mean this is cancer but having it checked to be sure is the correct next step.

Thank you for your prompt response.  Your explanation makes things a little easier to understand.

Should I/we be concerned about the word "spiculated"?

Thank you again.

Dear Alynn, Spiculated is another term used to describe the area seen.  All of these descriptors are used to determine the BIRAD rating.  No need to be more concerned about this.
