I posted last night. Did I ask a dumb question?

I have gotten a Mammo twice and an ultrasound and two manual exams and they found 2 systs and a lump. Tuesday I go for an Oncology Surgery consult. I am scared. What should I expect? Will they do a needle aspiration there or schedule it or biopsy it or schedule surgery?

My husband was just diagnosed with metatastic Prostate cancer and two in  the same family is foo close.

How come the Doctor who answers questions didn't answer mine? Did I say something offensive?

Hi Malinda

Sorry to hear about your husband.  I hope his treatment goes well.

I would just like to give you an idea on what to expect when you face the surgical oncologist.  He would first take your history, examine you, and see what tests have been done.  From this data, he would conclude if there is sufficient proof to suspect cancer.  If he does, then I think he would advise you to have a biopsy done.  Now, biopsies are of different types, depending on how much tissue is to be obtained.  The smallest and least painful is the FNAB (fine needle aspiration biopsy).  More often than not, this type of biopsy can already tell if it is cancer or not.  If the results are still doubtful, he may recommend a larger biopsy: core biopsy- using a larger needle; or excisional biopsy- where an incision is made and the mass taken out.

You'll be alright.  Just make sure you discuss everything with your surgeon.

Regards and God bless

hi...of course i cannot predict but for me, i was sent to general surgeon after last mammogram and he examined my breast then numbed it and took fluid with a needle then he used a different instrument and took tissue samples. It did not hurt. After the numbing stuff wore off it did a little but nothing to fear. You will be fine at the appt. After the biopsy results come in they will probably do the informative Q and A session as then they will know what they are dealing with.

I didn't look back to read your previous
post but please know that NO question is a dumb question. I would think that your consultation will be just that ... a consultation when treatments will be discussed and decided upon. I would think that some type of biopsy would be in order; the type will be determined when the Dr.s review your films as each type has it's own place in treatment plans. Now, this forum is a discussion forum and no Physician reads or answers the questions here. I know there is someone who signs as M.D. but no Cleveland Clinic Physician monitors this board. There is a board where the C.C. Physicians read and answer all questions. They have a dily limit for questions so it might take some time to be able to post there but it's always worth a try. If you are unable to post the first time, try a different time of day as the forum is reset at a different time of daY to give those in different time zones a chance. Try to be calm now and wait until your upcoming appointment ,... you will have the best opportunity to get answers to all your questions then. It wouldn't hurt to make a list before you go as it's easier to think clearly at home. Dr.s are used to anxious patients so don't be shy about it .. ask whatever is bothering you; believe me it's all been ask before and every question deserves an answer. good luck to you.

I am not sure what they will do when you consult your doctor. But just be patient and the doctor that answers questions on here will answer.
