lumpectomy vs mastectomy

if a woman decides to go ahead with mastectomy instead of needle localization lumpectomy, is the needle localization still a necessary procedure?

Dear hillgirl, Needle localization sometimes will still be necessary in some circumstances.  For example, when there is a very small area that can only be visualized by mammogram localization may be needed to in order to aid in sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure.

NO ... there would be no need to identify the suspicious area with a wire insertion if you are having the entire breast removed unless the Pathologist requested it.
