nodule/birads

I have several questions on my mammo and U.S report. What does Birads3 mean? Also is it common to have pain and sensitivity in the breast when you have a nodule? Can a nodule eventually become cancerous? I am a mother of four I did breast feed and had continous mastitis in the left breast that is where I currently have a nodule does that mean anything? I am really worried and unsure of what to do at this time so any information you can give me will help me alot. Thank You

Hi there.

BIRADS is a standardized form of reporting for mammograms, and this would say if the findings are more likely benign, malignant, or would need further evaluation.

Birads 3 means:
Probably Benign - Breast mammogram findings are most likely benign (>90%), short term follow up test is necessary

However, I believe that your nodule needs to be followed up closely, just as what the BIRADS score recommends.  Though the chance of being benign is high, there is still that small chance of being malignant (more on the BIRADS score here:  (http://biradsclass.blogspot.com/).

Have regular follow ups with your doctors and report to him anything that you might experience.

Regards and God bless.
