Hi,
You are right, that such spots (acanthosis nigricans) may be a marker of some types of cancer. However, it is much more common to have normally hyper-pigmented arm-pits, especially in certain ethnic groups.
If you have no other symptoms like weight loss, gastrointestinal pain, changes in bowel habits, jaundice, etc, then you probably have nothing to worry about. However you may like to visit your doctor about the spot in your armpit.

There is a small peanut size spot over the skin. It is not painful. I was worried since I heard that sometimes such spots are the sign of some sort of cancer.

Hi.
How would you characterize those brown spots?
Better go to your primary care physician to have those brown spots examined.
