Beener-Senile

The last week,,Beener my 17yr old senile kitty has been biting the heck outta us! Not a love bite either a viscious malicious bite! He is not showing any signs or symptoms of pain or discomfort,,eating good (too good) and pottying ok. He drew blood when he bit the back of my arm earlier tonight. Would this be part of the senile? I know that he has become incontinent and he now only goes potty on a puppy pad. At least he knows to do that.?????

Wishing you the best of luck - hope you always be able to sleep VERY WELL.
You know, to keep your patience and so on...

Girls, you are scaring me - what about having 3 senior crazy girls in the -I hope - remote future when I myself will be Senior?

He is still biting. The vet suggested using a muzzle?? I dont think thats the answer. He acts like he is so pissed off one minute then goes to a happy playful boy the next. I need to research more I guess how to care for a senile cat,,but I havent found much info. ~Bkitty
Its like walking on egg shells around him. He is not being aggresive towards the other cats that Ive noticed-but yet they steer clear of him as he is the alpha male in the house.

I feel like I'm in the same boat with you. Our 16 yr old TJ is exhibiting the same behavior, only to a lesser degree.  I  swear it's related to senility.  He's always been a sweet, loving cat and now when he sits on the arm of my chair, sometimes he will reach over and bite me on the arm.  Sometimes he will bite when i am petting him.  But no blood drawn...yet! He's never been mean to the other cats...I have to attribute this change in attitude to his age.  I wonder if kitty prozac would help?  I would like to "nip" this in the bud, if possible.

They suggested the Thunder Shirt? Something to make him feel secure. Again,,my husband and I tip toeing around him. He sleeps with us in bed at night and God forbid should any of us move a teeny bit! He just snaps and grabs whatever skin is exposed!  he is also aggressive to the other kitties and they too are tip toeing around him! This is so hard to see my loving playful kitty turning into,,well,,,a viscious mean animal!

Beener went to the vet,,no dental problems but they want to put him on amoxi drops for 7 days "just in case". Hahahahahahaha! I am not even going to try and give those unless im suited up in steel amour! He still is being a meanie!
They say its the dementia.. Sigh.....

Hi, I agree that your kitty might have a dental issue going on.  Also, if you haven't already, get him checked out for hyperthyroid disease.  This is also common with kitties over 7 yrs. old and can cause behavior problems.  And, I'm also suspicious of him having hyperthyroid disease because you said his appetite was too good.

Maybe, once these things are checked out and treated, you'll have your usual sweet kitty back!

Good luck and please let us know if we can help any more!!

I just picked beener up,,he took both his paws and squeezed my head and bit me on the nose drawing blood. I tried to look in his mouth but he is pi$$ed. He is just...angry for some reason. He bit the heck outta my husband last night while he was sleeping for no reason! He sleeps on the pillow between us. You try to get near him and he growls! I know he has bad breath.

Bkitty I agree totally with Sonrissa, dental problems are very common esp. in senior kitties....common and very painful even if he is showing no signs of pain(many kitties don't)...he needs to have a good dental checkup. rather than this being a senility or behavioral issue I do believe he is trying to tell you that 'it hurts' mommy :(

Beener is a really Senior Citizen! I havent heard anything about this biting thing! But, the drooling makes me wonder if he has a dental problem? A bad tooth or a mouth sore? Are you able to look in his mouth? If this continues perhaps a trip to the vet is in order! Take care, hope Beener stops biting the hand that feeds him! (smile)
