im afraid I took her to the vet an hour ago and he felt lumps in her lower abdomen. She had lost another 300grams over the last few days and decided we should be brave and have her put to sleep. I cuddled her while he injected the anaesthetic overdose and I sobbed as she went limp. I laid her carefully on the counter but her heart was still pumping. He gave her a second dose and this stopped her heart.
I am climbing the walls, not easily handling this but I know time will heal.

I am so sorry. I am where you were a few days ago. My cat, actually my sons cat, has cancer and is losing weight. She does not look sick in her eyes, her coat is still beautiful. It just seems so not right.

I hope you can find some comfort in the words of those who understand and care.

Don't feel guilty.  You did all anyone could've done.  You have to give yourself permission to grieve your loss and to be able to take care of yourself.  Appreciate the time you did have and the happy memories you have of your kitty.  Your kitty was looking at you with love, please believe that.  So sorry for your loss.

its alright to grieve Ed and feel the loss, I think thats our way of saying our goodbyes, we would do that for any family member, never be ashamed of the tears of love for man or animal that is a gift.
that last look in her eyes Ed was one of thank you I love you too......and not why me.

Please don't feel guilty, and find comfort in your vet's words. Your cat didn't get cancer because of you. Life is unfair sometimes. And, she needed to rest and be at peace. She is now at peace and surely looking down at you and Thanking you for the time you spent with her. It is not your fault. It was never your fault. Please be sure of that, and think of her as the happy kitty she was, and the one who will always have a special place in your heart.

I'm sending you a hug. Cry all you want. It's good for the soul....just get it all out. You will in time feel a bit better and realize that she couldn't have had a better owner.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. I know how difficult that is and how one tends to wonder if they did the right thing. I had to put my dog to sleep 8 months ago. It's never an easy thing. You didn't want her to suffer and did the best you could for her. She knows that. Please don't blame yourself for anything. You gave her a wonderful life and she appreciates that.
Now she has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge to play with the other pets who went before her. I don't know how she liked dogs but my dog that died liked cats. Maybe he was one of the pets who greeted her. :)
I pray God will give you peace and comfort at this time. *Hugs*

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts and it's comforting to know others know how I feel. I think loss is the worse pain in the world. I've had 5 heart attacks, had a triple bypass, had 6 stents and still get bad angina. I can honestly say that all those pains have been nothing compared to this. I just cant get that image out of my head where I was cuddling her while she was injected and she was looking into my eyes as if to say "why me". Oh god here come the tears again. Life is so unfair. The vet said that he was amased at her condition apart from the unfortunate cancer and the condition of her coat was fantastic, he had never seen one so good. I have three other cats and I asked how long cats tend to live because I really had no idea. Average apparently is 12-16 and he has a cat which is now 20 and still healthy. I explained how I read on the internet that most cat foods are made from meat unfit for human consumption and many people blame this for cancers. I suppose I was blaming myself. He said there is no direct link between the two and he has seen cancer in cats which are fed fresh fish etc. In her last days I was turning different meats and fish into soup and she was just about managing a couple of slurps each day. I cant help but feel guilty, like there was more I could have done. I know having her put down was the right thing, but what gives me that right, I feel really awful. Sorry for blabbing on, Im struggling.

Oh Ed..I am so sorry for your loss and just before Christmas too...I had so hope you two could be together for this last Christmas...she knows how much you love her Ed. and you've been a good daddy...this is the hardest and most unselfish decision in the whole world.....if she was loosing weight its because she wasn't eating right and was probably in some pain, with the holidays coming it may not have been easy to reach a vet if she should have gotten in distress, so you did do the right and unselfish thing for her Ed.
I know all this means a hill of beans right now when your hurting like theres no tomorrow, believe me I do understand......in the end the hurting is worth all the good times.
Again I am so very very sorry for you...bless little Sapphire.

Christ, this is heartbreaking. Trust me, Ed, I can feel your pain, and I am so, so very sorry for your loss. Hang in there pal. Your kitty is in a good place now, where suffering never takes place. You'll be ok buddy. My deepest condolences to you. I know how hard this is :(

Oh Ed, I thought you would have more time with Sapphire.  I am so very sorry to hear this.  I know what a difficult decision that was for you.  With her losing more weight, it sounds like it was the right one.  My heart truly goes out to you.  I am in tears with you, for sure :(
