Relating to the biological parent

I have a stepson( he is a great kid and bond well with his half simblings) who is 10years old. For the past 5 yrs his mother denied my husband of 7 yrs any chance of associating with his son cause he was married. It has been really difficult dealing with her. Six months back she asked my husband if we could stay with the kid cause of her work commitment. We agreed and i was luck to find a place for him in one of our local schools but two days later after asking my husband to ask her for transfer documents she told him she has sorted her issues and will be staying with the child. Three weeks later she sms-ed and told him she want my stepson to come and stay with us of which i considered it to be a child 's play and declined. The lady recently called me after she got my number from my husband cause he wont discuss the issue with her. After talking it thru with her (she mentioned having accommodation problems & finance difficulties) i agreed we could help. I did that just for the sake of the child cause she never respected us.
My question is am i setting up my set for a rough ride and should i approach this situation. I want to help but at the same time its scary because of past experience with this lady and history of similar cases

If the child's mother is that unstable and unable to offer consistently responsible parenting it may be time to seek a change in the custody arrangement. In the meantime, all you can do is extend yourself for this boy's benefit whenever you can. That's exactly what I would suggest, even if you anticipate his mother may renege at any point. The only way stability will be achieved is through a change is custody.
