When children are in their early years (1-2 years old), it can be quite difficult to ascertain the presence of a serious Pervasive Developmental Disorder such as Autistic Disorder. What people often notice is a problem with how the young child negotiates the world, in particular in relation to sensory experiences. So, sensory integration issues are often noticed early on, and as the child's social interactions, including communication, expand after the age of two, other limitations become more obvious. It is probably fair to say that children who display Autistic Disorder often display some problems with sensory integration, but by no means is it true that sensory integration problems are a precursor or indicator of Autistic Disorder.

Absolutely!  However do not let them label without documented evaluation/examinationes etc.  At 3 yrs. my son had severe sensory issues and many Autistic-like (PDD) tendencies, but he was diagnosed as Globally Delayed, which basically meant to the Layman ... Delayed In Many Areas.  They even put him in a PDD class, since he displayed SO MANY PDD-like issues.  The school was wonderful and he did very well!!  He is now 7 yrs., doing well. although struggling with a few things - but I just wanted to say that they do not ALWAYS go hand-in-hand!  Best of luck!!
