Fifth disease, also known as erythema infectiosum, is a contagious viral (parvovirus B19) illness. Not all people who are exposed to the virus become ill, and some contract the illness but have no symptoms or very vague, mild symptoms. The initial symptoms of the illness resemble the flu, and include runny nose and sore throat, headache and abdominal pain, fever of 100-102 degrees, and body ache/joint pain. The rash develops approx. 7 days after the appearance of the flu-like symptoms.
