five year old depressed and insecure

Hello, Not sure what to do about five year old son. Up until a week ago he was a normal, secure, confident fun loving little boy. He had an incident with a peer at pre school and accidentally wiped his nose on this little boy because they were holding hands at circle time and he didn't have a free hand(allergies and such). I know my son didn't do this on purpose because he said he didn't and he wouldn't do that. This was one of his best buddies. He went completely off on my son and shook a fist at him and said they were no longer friends. My son apologized and it took a few days for the friend to come around but he finally did. We aren't having anymore playdates with this child because he is way too unpredictable. The teachers said he did act very mad and they couldn't believe how mad he got. Since then my carefree son is a worry wart to the point he is scaring me. He says we don't like him(his father and I) and he is trying to always validate everything he does. "Mommy, I have an itch",  everything is a play by play all day. "mommy is this okay"  I don't know what to do but keep reassuring him but he is not himself at all. He is very emotional and has a worried look all the time. What should we do except keep reassuring him. I'm afraid this incident has put him into some kind of depression!

Be patient and reassuring. This acute response will gradually go away and he will revert to his former level of functioning.
