generic lipitor

My husband was prescribed generic lipitor about a year ago. Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep. he has missed the last 2 days of work. He did not take either drugs yesterday. Saw his dr. and was told to stop the lipitor....I'm wondering if this is connected with lipitor and slo niacin. He has no history of heart disease. the main reason for the lipitor was to raise his good cholesterol. I have no knowledge of these medications, but did look up side effects of statins. If it does happen to be a side effect, how long should he wait to see if this pain resolves itself after stopping the lipitor....any help is appreciated.   TY, Thelma

Raising HDL (good cholesterol) is best accomplished in my experience by daily exercising for about 30 minutes, a brisk walk qualifies.  Also, good quality fish oil (salmon, mackerel, tuna) is considered a good additive for the purpose of raising HDL.

This is probably due to the Lipitor, it is a common side effect. A couple thoughts, one is that people that restart a statin after a break do better. Also, there are others that are not as strong and are tolerated better like Simvastatin, he should ask his doctor.
