Why do i have chronic phlegm?

Hi, i am richard and i smoke hookah every week. Hookah is a pipe with tabacco. In the past summer, i smoked everyday with my friends. One day i started to get phlegm and it wouldnt go away. My first thought was it was a cold but i still have it and it has been almost 5 months. Does anyone know something i would have? I am 20 years old and in college. Please let me know.

Did you share your hookah pipe with anyone else when you smoke?  Sounds like you could have caught some sort of pulmonary infection.  The overabundant phlegm is the result of your body trying to get rid of the irritants from the tobacco and possibly from whatever foreign bodies that has introduced into your body.  Ask your friend if they are experiencing the same thing before.  Also, i would recommend collecting a sputum sample and give it to your doctor for further examination.

this is an edit. The color of my phlegm is a light yellow and the consistancy of the phlegm varies. When i excersise or smoke, my phlegm becomes a thicker consistency. My worries are that the phlegm occurs when i am not smoking. I do not smoke cigarettes. Your help is much appreciated.
