Infertility After J-Pouch Surgery?

Hey everyone my names Steph, I am 25 Years old, and I had ulcerative Colitis when I was just 5 years old. At the age of 9 & 10 I had 2 major operations to remove my large intestine. I had an ileostomy for about 6-9 months, and then everything was rerouted and put back to functioning . My parents were told that I may not have kids some day, and that  day has come. We have been trying to conceive for almost a year now with no success. I am just wondering if anyone else with these surgeries and disease have found themselves with this problem too? I have very irregular menses and that may be the problem too, but I just want to find my odds before I go to the doctor and they tell me im “screwed”, Anyone have kids after all this? Naturally or with help? Any irregularities in you menses? Thanks to all who help.

Stephanie

Hello,
I had a total colectomy in 3/05 with tons of complications.  Had 5 surgeries.  I took one round of Clomid 10/07 after trying to conceive for 6months and got pregnant and had a c-section. We have been trying for baby # 2 with no luck.  Been on Clomid 100mg and had IVF 3/10 and it failed. We just started back on 50 Mg of Clomid because doing IVF again would be so costly. We pray we can conceive this time. It's just strange that I got pregnant so easily the first time.

Hi Stephanie when I read your post I just had to write in to encourage you.  I am now 33 yrs old and had the same surgeries you had at age 21.  My husband and I tried to have a baby for about 3-4 years and had no luck.  We went to a fertility specialist and due to my medical history was encouraged to either adopt or do surrogacy.  This was only due to my extensive amount of surgeries.  We decided on surrogacy b/c a friend of ours offered to carry our baby for us.  So the plan was to do In-Vitro with a surrogate.  Well, a week before we were to start the fertility medications, I found out I was pregnant.  We were utterly amazed and so were all my drs.  I had gotten pregnant without any help, well only with the help of God.  Our little Clark is now 6 months old and we adore him.  So yes, it may take you longer to get pregnant, but know that it is not IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!    We call Clark our miracle baby:)  I pray that the Lord will bless you with a baby also.

Hey there Stephanie

Sorry to hear about your battles with UC, you have been through a bit. TTC is difficult without disease let alone with UC and J-pouches. Dont let just one doctor determine what your body can or cannot do. I have a friend a few years back that eneded up conceiving after 9 months after her entire intestines were removed and delivered a healthy baby by C-section ofcourse (little boy is healthy and happy).
What you may need to do is go and see a OB/GYN and ask for an ultrasound, maybe check your bloods and maybe change your diet for a bit and see how that goes. Maybe buy some Ovulation kits and check when your most fertile. Good luck
