Michele Bachmann Pledges to Have the EPA’s “Doors Locked and Lights Turned Off”

If Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann can’t abolish the Environmental Protection Agency like she promised in June, she may just try to lock employees out of the building.

Speaking at campaign rally in Iowa last week, Bachmann made it clear that she’ll do anything it takes to stamp out environmental protection efforts – even if that means padlocking the front door and switching off the breakers, according to a report from the Des Moines Register:

“I pledge to you I’m not a talker. I’m a doer,” she said…

“And I guarantee you the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) will have doors locked and lights turned off and they will only be about conservation,” she said earlier today at a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids. “It will be a new day and a new sheriff in Washington, D.C.”

Republicans have made anti-EPA statements a major part of their campaigns, with Bachmann making some of the most inflammatory remarks. In June, she famously called for “the mother of all repeal bills” focused on the EPA, which she re-named “the job killing organization of America.”

Republican House leaders are also ratcheting up pressure on EPA regulations. Last week, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton called on President Obama to stop new EPA regulations on mercury and air toxics, calling them a “regulatory train wreck.”

The EPA is a convenient bogey man for Republican leaders when it comes to their messaging on jobs. But what they don’t mention is that new regulations will be phased in over a 3-year period of time, giving most power companies enough time to meet standards. This has nothing to do with today’s economic issues. And over the next five years, the number of jobs created through retrofitting power plants with pollution controls could be in the tens of thousands, with virtually no impact on nation-wide rates, according to EIA projections.

Over the 40-year history of the EPA, there’s simply no evidence of the kind of mass murdering of jobs that politicians claim. In fact, since the agency was created in the early 1970’s, GDP has grown by 200% and common pollutants have dropped by 63%. But the facts don’t seem to matter when it comes to environmental issues this campaign season.

At least Bachmann’s plan to shut off all the lights at the EPA will conserve ene

I think there are something like 17 or 18thousand employees we are talking about. It probably does have alot of waste like all the other programs but again, throwing the baby out with the bathwater is not the answer.

I don't know, I think it has to be a pretty tough job.  I mean, their job IS to protect the enviroement right?  And the case I watched on Sunday night, they could prove that the water was being impacted, and in some cases no longer safe to drink.  So, they had to do what they did I guess.  The flip side is that jobs are so desperately needed, and this move closed down some jobs.  Same as oil drilling.  Our oil sands here are taking a lot of negative flack because of the impact on the enviroment, and they are tightening up procedures, etc.  I mean, we have to protect jobs, but we also have to protect our planet.  I am far from an enviromentalist, but I can see how difficult all this is.  How can you just close down an entire division that it seems is just doing what they are supposed to do?  I mean, isn't that their mandate?

In all seriousness, didn't B.O. at one point use those EXACT words?

"Drill baby drill!"

Am I imagining that? He did say that, right? I'm pretty sure I'm remembering correctly.

A government entity overstepping it's boundaries?!?

The hell you say!!! I don't believe it. Never happened. Our government is the PICTURE of restraint and good decision-making. Overstep their boundaries... the EPA... that's RICH.

Come on Adgal. Wake up. Never happened.

(being facetious, in case you were wondering;-)

Speaking of the EPA, did anyone see the special on CNN Sunday night?  It was called "The Battle for Blair Mountain".  It was about coal mining (specifically the type where they remove the top of the mountain) and the battle between the minors and the enviromentalists.  Tough situation...there was almost no doubt that this type of mining was having a negative enviromental impact, but at the same time, there were an awful lot of livelyhoods at stake.  A no win situation really.  Anyway, the EPA was accused of reaching beyond it's boundaries.  It was really interesing.

Bachmann???  Brother, I hope not or I will be writing one of you guys in for President.  Funny story about then EPA... actually not funny at all.

A good buddy of mine, who is an accomplished author and a professional bar-b-quer wanted to open a eatery here.  He made the bar-b-que pit for another establishment in town, and he wanted to run his own place again as it was his passion.  He found a building to rent and submitted plans to the city and county, which is necessary standard procedure here.  The city and county said that an 'environmental impact study" would be necessary before he could begin construction of the bar-b-que pit.  (The building in question had already been a cafe, and the entire parking lot had been paved and or asphalted.  The cement pad necessary for the pit was already put down.  Pre-existing in other words.)

Among the reasons the EPA listed for advising against the cafe were.... "bringing in and burning mesquite could potentially add a certain pollution/irritant to the air not common to the valley" and that the area was "considered habitat for a species listed as critical".  The town denied his request and proposal even though the only thing he was going to do was build a smoker on a pre-existing cement pad.

Oh, to date, 3 cafe's that I know of in the valley, nope, make that 4.... all of them import and burn mesquite.  Personally, the EPA I feel is almost necessary but they are looking far more like a special interest group than a faction of government.  I also believe that they are completely biased and stand only on their opinions rather than the needs/desires of the nations people. (Not just referring to oil and gas)

My jury is still out on Bachmann.

I'm with you again teko... this makes no sense.

Could this be a REALLY round-about way to get the moratorium on drilling (certain parts anyway), in Alaska, lifted?

If the EPA isn't around to stop the oil & gas companies, they'l be able to open up the oil fields on the North Slope and drill at will.

Just a thought.

So this makes sense to someone? This doesnt even make common sense to me. Anyone remember what the country was like before we had these protections? Seriously? Crazy Stuff! Does no one remember when people died because of bad water, bad food or polluted air?
