New report shows early chaos at Japan nuke plant

6/19/11

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43454729/ns/world_news-asia_pacific/?gt1=43001

Government reports released this month said the damage and leakage at the plant were worse than previously thought, with some of the nuclear fuel in three reactors likely having melted through the main cores and inner containment vessels. They said the radiation that leaked into the air amounted to about one-sixth of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 — double previous estimates.

TEPCO and the government have said they aim to bring the reactors to "a stable and cold shutdown" by January. But some experts say the plan is too optimistic because high radiation, contaminated water, debris and other obstacles have already caused delays.

On Sunday, TEPCO opened a door at Unit 2 to allow workers to install a cooling system and equipment to prevent an explosion. Workers have entered the reactor building before, but only for brief monitoring visits.

TEPCO said radiation released by the ventilation would be too small to threaten human health, and reported no abnormality. Workers have taken similar steps at Unit 1, which is moving ahead of the other reactors.

Meanwhile, more radioactive water is pooling at the plant. Workers scrambled to restart a key cleanup system, which was shut down Saturday hours after beginning full operations because a component reached its radioactivity limit faster than expected.

More than 100,000 tons of contaminated water at the plant could overflow within two weeks if action is not taken.

I also heard in the last few days that our own system is needing some work. Anyone hear? It just goes to show how little control we really have over anything in our lives doesnt it? I guess we will know in the next little while if deformities start showing up or the cancer rate increases.

Even here in California they do not update us as to radiation levels I have to root around on the internet for facts or natural news.com  sends me an update. One site says take extra iodine one says no don't take it .as always they just don't get it right ...we simply want the truth and the facts ...It was the same when Chenobyl hit, no government telling whether we could drink milk or eat veg till weeks later ,and this Fukishima was bigger than Chenobyl. Its not about us ..its about our children, their health in the future ....

Who needs the apocolypse...we are doing a pretty good job of destroying the world all on our own.  We seem to be happily destroying our water, farm land, etc.  Good for us!!

Well we all know, its just common sense that this stuff travels in the air currents. We and our land and our livestock and gardens have all been and are being constantly radiated. I hear people argue over those smokers and their second hand smoke should be outlawed so everyone can breathe in fresh air. I think its kind of amuzing tho, look at us now! I also dont believe a word they say about anything, seems to me it is a huge coverup and especially here in our own country. I mean, at a time when they hammer about every stupid thing in the media till you cannot stand it anymore and narry a word about this. Its almost like it never happened.......We are toast.

Jeez.... Right as this whole thing was unfolding, I read a story (can't remember where I found it) pertaining to nuke plant safety, and in particular in Japan.  The story went on to say that anything close to "catastrophic" wasn't a likelihood because of Japans preparedness.  The story went on to cite all of the drills and constant training that takes place in Japans sites, and that their precautions were even more stable that the U.S.

The story also went on to say that because of Chernobyl, safety at all nuclear plants across the globe have become far more safe/stable.

One thing that still strikes me as funny is, we really do not know what the long term affects are once an exposure of this magnitude takes place.  We've got science that'll say we can expect x,y, and z in the very near future, we even have some science that will say what to expect 30-40 years down the road..... but no proof.  To me, it just kind of seems a bit risky.

There are plans for a nuclear waste storage site near my home town.  The site was chosen because of the rural area, and it being easily secured with the U.S. Airforce base near by.  When you read the small print, it goes on to say that the area has regular seismic activity, but that really isn't a safety concern because a major event hadn't happened in over 200 years..... (if its only been 200 years since a major event, kind of sounds like they're due to me...)  It goes on to say that where the lead storage containers will be placed, the stone and structure of the lava tubes (yup, an extinct volcano) makes it an ideal situation.

I sometimes wonder who is actually in control or in charge with things like this.  The decision making process often seems a bit flawed.
