Cantor: No emergency disastor relief without cuts

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2011_08/cantor_no_emergency_disaster_r031861.php

If you can’t watch clips online, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) appeared on Fox News this morning to confirm what he and his office have been saying all along: Republicans won’t allow emergency aid in the wake of Hurricane Irene unless Democrats meet GOP demands: dollar-for-dollar spending cuts elsewhere.

In the interview, the dimwitted Majority Leader tried to make this sound like common sense — instead of an unprecedented move. Remember, no modern Congress, regardless of which party was in the majority, has ever demanded offsets in response to American natural disaster, not even Tom DeLay’s.

Cantor also said House Republicans have “already” dealt with this by approving $1 billion in disaster aid in May, paying for it by cutting funds for a renewable energy program. Whether the Majority Leader understands what he’s saying or not is unclear, but the costs associated with the weekend’s hurricane will far exceed $1 billion.

Let’s also not lose sight of the larger context here. As far as Eric Cantor is concerned, launching wars in Iraq and Afghanistan do not need to be paid for. Tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires do not need to be paid for. Bailing out Wall Street does not need to be paid for. But when American communities are struck by a natural disaster, all of a sudden, House Republicans discover a new standard: if Democrats want to help affected areas, the GOP has some demands that must be met.

And in case this story isn’t quite mind-numbing enough, also note that FEMA has been forced to temporarily suspend “some payments to rebuild roads, schools and other structures destroyed during spring tornadoes in Joplin, Mo., and Southern states and other recent natural disasters” in order to respond to Hurricane Irene.

That this is happening in the wealthiest nation in the world, simply because the Republican Party has been taken over by charlatans and fools, is a national disgrace.

For all of our differences over party, ideology, and creed, we know that when disaster strikes and our neighbors face a genuine emergency, America responds. We don’t ask what’s in it for us; we don’t weigh the political considerations; we don’t pause to ponder the larger ideological implications.

We act. It’s who we are; it’s what we do.

Or it was, right up until Americans elected a radicalized House majority.

What you are not getting, is this. This is not the ONLY article out there commenting on this issue. Many before this one. Take your pick. He was slinging this mess before the hurricane even hit, and back when the earthquakes and tornados going. If you cannot see how politics is being played here at the peoples expense, that is sad.

We have disasters every single year and problems funding Fema and others. Every single year. This is not a first other than how you have people playing politics and bringing the focus on them instead of just doing what we have always done in taking care of people in a crisis. My point is that this guy has all of a sudden developed a conscious for the deficit. Where was it before and how come he got it now? Politics. They want you to know Fema will only get what they dicide she gets. In other words they are weilding their power over the purse strings at the peoples expense. This was always taken care of before without all that so why now.

Yeah teko, I watched the clip.  That is precisely what we've been talking about.... all of us.  Now you've changed gears to some notices that his secretary sent out.  Okay, so give me the links and I'll be more than happy to talk about that stuff too.

You're ripping the guy to shreds and are acting like I am defending him.  I simply said that what he said in the clip that your link provided was common sense, was how things work in DC, and that he answered a question.

I must no be following you.
” You are looking at one clip where fox is trying to pull him out of the hole he had already dug for himself and make him look a little cleaner is all”. Are you referring to the clip in the article? If you were, why would the righter choose this clip that contradicts his article? I am also having a hard time following you on the Political Agenda. It doesn’t matter to me if he was a Republican or Democrat, what he said was nothing but common since.

“ Take your party affiliation out of the story and take a few hours to look at all of the misappropriated monies used and still being used in the aftermath of Katrina”

Here in Louisiana, we still have Hundreds if not Thousands of FEMA Trailers that are just sitting in fields. A lot of them have never been lived in. It is estimated FEMA bought about 145,000 of these trailers at about $20,000.00 a pop (not counting the cost of having them hauled). Now they are Auctioning them off. A friend of mine bought one (never used, completely furnished, including Kitchen and Air Conditioning) a couple of weeks ago, to use for a hunting Camp. He paid $2,500.00 for it.
I read that the average cost of refurbishing the used trailers was about $1,500. Why are these trailers not refurbished by the Government and reused? The first thing we need to do is get FEMAs wasteful spending under control.

Oh you watched the clip did you? Did you read the notices his secretary or whoever put out before the hurricane even hit, the warning he gave about not covering when the earthquakes hit, or the tornados. You are looking at one clip where fox is trying to pull him out of the hole he had already dug for himself and make him look a little cleaner is all. Politics is what it is, then the backlash, now fox doing damage control. Why? cause people are pssd! Badly pssd is why.
