GOP offers own proposal to avert 'fiscal cliff'

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/03/15649000-gop-offers-own-proposal-to-avert-fiscal-cliff?lite

A snippet from the article:

"As Republicans put it, they would raise $800 billion in new revenue through tax reform, $600 billion in health savings, $200 billion from changes to the Consumer Price Index, $300 billion in discretionary spending cuts, and another $300 billion in savings in mandatory spending. Many of the health savings track closely with the changes to Medicare first proposed in Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan’s budgets.

Republicans say the plan, using the Obama administration’s math, would achieve $4.6 trillion in savings.

It’s unclear, though, whether the Republican plan would move toward ending the stalemate around the fiscal cliff negotiations, with less than a month remaining until the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts are scheduled to snap into place on Jan. 1."

One of the things that could have easily cost Obama the election is the state of the economy after his first 4 years in office.  It is easy to blame everyone else including the previous president and give Obama a pass (which seems to be the popular thing to do here)---  but Obama needs to own it for once and I personally think the Repubs should step back and say "okay, Obama owns this.  Go with his plan and Hold HIM accountable" and let it fly where it may.  Because I think obama will spend us into oblivion.  I really have that perception of him. And when we run out of money . . .  as stated here, he'll find more (or print more).  I think he is reckless and I honestly wouldn't run my own home's finances the way he proposes to run this countries.

I think that the top 99% can be taxedmore as this is desperate times  but no, I don't think it is fair.  but we've discussed that ad nauseum here.  So much so that that conversation has grown dull.

I'm just keeping my head down and am going to hope and pray that my family survives financially the next four years.

I say that the Republicans call Obama on his bluff and go with his proposal and then allow HIM to explain why it didn't work when he bankrupts this country.

I also think what a joke it was that obama made such a showy for the cameras move by saying "I'll meet with romney and republicans to get input".  Yeah right.  That's funny that he pretended to be open minded.

That is exactly what it is and hence, Romneyhood term was invented. Remember?

Obama winning means the majority of people didn't want RR in control of making these decisions.
If people liked their ideas and wanted them in control, they'd have elected them.
Simple.

Although Obama may indeed have wanted to get some ideas from Romney he also could have said this as a symbolic gesture to help bring the country together.

I didn't like much of the RR plan, it sounded like taking from the poor to give to the rich, to me.

Just because Obama won the election doesn't mean there weren't good, usable ideas presented by the R/R team in regards to the economy.  Why dispose of them all because of the election?  That seems like more of that "we won, you didn't, neener neener" mentality.

I don't get that.

Obama himself said he wanted to sit down and hear more from Romney on his ideas to fix the economy.  If Obama himself could recognize that there were some good measures proposed, why is everyone else so quick to dismiss them?  It's hard to deny that Romney doesn't know his way around business and money.  Why wouldn't the politicians on both sides be interested in what he has to say?

And according to simpson bowles, this is nothing like their plan either

The letter doesn't say the GOP's proposal is identical to it...the letter uses examples from the debt commission to illustrate a point that some of the GOP's proposal is in line with what they recommended, again, minus the tax hike for the rich.

And while I fundamentally disagree with the tax hikes on the top 2%, I think there's room for compromise there, thing is, both sides are holding a hard line on that issue.

You said:

Of course there are a lot of similarities to R/R's proposed plan to deal with the deficit.  Why wouldn't there be?  Some of their plan had a lot of good ideas, and a lot of the people were supporting it.  That was R/R's strongest area, in the campaign.

It is exactly the R/R plan. The people made their decision about that plan on Nov. 6
R/R were rejected. Obama was selected. His plan got the vote.

And according to simpson bowles, this is nothing like their plan either

Now you really didnt think I could pass that up, did you ng? :o

Me Me Me says let em all expire, remove the leverage period. Me says

I agree...100%.

By the way, that 50 bil in stimulus is for infrastructure and was submitted and obstructed along long time ago. I see it as putting people to work now, and getting some much needed work done. I see that as a win win. But that is me. .

Well, now infrastructure is no doubt very important, but then again, the COST of these undertakings are insane..highway robbery really (pun not intended, but it works!)

The figure for what it costs to maintain (or reconstruct) a mile of the PA turnpike is (I believe) 20 million bucks.  That includes the workers, everything.  REALLY????  20 MILLION?

Can't we do it a little cheaper than that?

I hope these clowns on both sides start compromising and just get something done.  A LOT of the people feel the same way we do...let them all expire.  Wish someone would listen!
