Google Denies Requests To Remove Videos of Police Brutality [UPDATED]

In a show of good faith today, Google touted the fact that it has refused to cooperate with local law enforcement agencies in the U.S. who requested the removal of YouTube videos of police brutality and criticisms of law enforcement officials. Google cited its transparency report from the first half of this year, but to mention it today is telling. With violent crackdowns at Occupy Oakland this week, citizen media like YouTube have been a vital channel. From Google's mid-year transparency report:

"We received a request from a local law enforcement agency to remove YouTube videos of police brutality, which we did not remove. Separately, we received requests from a different local law enforcement agency for removal of videos allegedly defaming law enforcement officials. We did not comply with those requests, which we have categorized in this Report as defamation requests."

teko, it doesn't even have to be that.  it really takes nothing to set off  riot.  emotions get the best of people and not all people act the same way.  Some respond well in stressful situations and some can make an entire group look bad.

It can be a plant... or it could be the other way.

I think it was a plant by the republicans. They put this guy in the crowd to give the crowd a bad name. Its a conspiracy I think to make the OWs look bad.

Innocent people often get shot by police.  It happened in my home town more often than I can guess.

But being there, and being there either before or after it happened are entirely two different things.  Saying you had been at the World Trade Center, and saying you were at the World Trade Center during 911 is two different things.

Look, I am sure that there are some very well meaning people there, perhaps even the majority of the good folks at the scene are that way.  But years of experience of working with large groups tells me that there is a real, real good probability that something precipitated the questionable event.  Not everyone in that group has their eyes on the same thing....  I can see how some dolt made this an "us v.s. the man" situation and got fed up and did something stupid.... like throw **** at a cop.  It happens all of the time.  All of the time!

So saying that nobody saw anyone from the group throw something could very easily be construed as saying, "oh, that guy was not with us".  Not everyone was looking at that guy.... the guy throwing stuff is right there on your link, and who knows what happened before that.

But I have been on the scene, though not at that moment.
I have talked to many people who were there.
And I heard the same story.
Nobody saw anyone from the group throw anything, doesn't mean it didn't happen but. . .
They made such a point about remaining nonviolent.
They didn't want to provoke the police.
This is Oakland where an innocent kid ( 24yr.) was shot in the back while lying prone because he happened to be black. People here know about not provoking the cops.

What is interesting, is how it has invigorated the group,it's grown larger and is moving forward quite rapidly.

LOL, any more excuses?  Nobody on this thread/board was right there on scene.  If you were, you'd have your opinion and others would have theirs.

I belong to a local bank, thank goodness.

The big deal in a circle of friends around here is cell phones.  Everyone feels as if they are getting raked over the coals.  A buddy went to a cell providers store yesterday to formally complain and drop their service and join with another.... turns out, they gladly accepted his complaint, and offered to drop his payments down by half, and refunded him a couple of hundred bucks.... he took the refund and his wife is going down there to cancel today.

Of course emotions are involved. Duh! Ya think? Like mine right now for example! Any more excuses for their behavior? It is what it is and it is ugly, pure and simple. Last I heard we do not live in a police state? Remember the 60's? I hear Nov 5th is leave your bank day. Anyone tired enuff of holding the vaseline jar to be inconvenienced for a cause?

By no means am I calling you dishonest... not even close.  I am just saying, unless you saw each and every individual walk in, and somehow kept your eyes on all few hundred of them, anything could have happened.

I used to and still do for that matter, work in large groups.  I have seen situations get real bad, real quick.  And I have also seen upstanding citizens give eye witness accounts that were not accurate.  There are too many emotions involved with this stuff.

I had a guy jump on my back and try to put a choke hold on me, to choke me out.  (Rear naked choke is what it's called)  I had the where with all, to grab both of his legs, each one on either side of my body, and just threw myself over backwards.  (This guy went about 150lbs, and I went about 270lbs in the day.)  Obviously, I knocked the wind out of him, using all my years of grappling experience got out of what was left of his choke and got him taken care of.  And eye witness, not 7 feet from where we were, told police officers that I had picked this guy up, over my head and body slammed him.... I went and retrieved the video tape for law enforcement, rant it back for them numerous times, and it completely discredited this "eye witness".

So, emotions get in the way.  They always will.

And, ABC is pretty left of center.  If Fox is right of center, ABC has them covered on the other side.

Sorry Brice, I live here, I'm doing medical treatment which does effect my emotions, and I talk to people on the street.
I try my utmost to be honest, its important to me, always has been.

Calling ABC left wing is a joke.
The country has moved so far to the right, Eisenhower looks like a far leftie.

So, you're going to consider  a poor quality feed as a viable news source, you're going to consider youtube as a viable news source, and then completely shoot down the left wing news source of ABC?  Fox, MSNBC, HLN, CNN, C-Span, and who else?  Any of them have viable footage?

Is the media heavily censored?  Pretty much.... been that way for years.  And when we will sit and rely on 1 minute and 8 seconds of footage to tell the whole story, we are really setting ourselves up as gullible.

Last night, (Saturday the 29th) my local news station advised avoiding driving through downtown Oakland as Occupy is on the march.
So, I go online where the Occupy Oakland live feed is not working.
Someone texting, gives an alternate live feed web site. There, I see a large group, maybe up to 2000? with various signs.
The camera is a cheap one, possibly a phone, but I can make out what street they're heading down and what they're saying.
I check out the live feed from ABC, which shows a different picture entirely, of a much smaller group without the signs and its hard to tell where they are.
Then I switch back to the poorer quality live feed. Eventually they meet up with a police line. They continue past them and a cop car arrives and then~~nothing. The live feed stops, the screen is blank.
Within a few minutes it resumes but it is obviously recorded from an earlier part of the march.
ABC shows fake news shots. Live feed is stopped.
Proof positive, to me that  the media is heavily censored. They are trying to downplay the numbers in this movement and avoid showing police involvement.
