Antibiotic premedication for uncontrolled diabetes

by JP848, Dec 01, 2008 02:26PM
Is there a general guideline for when to pre-medicate uncontrolled diabetics prior to oral surgery?  I know that I should consult the patient's physician but is the need for pre-medication co-related with the patient's blood glucose level?  What is the general cut-off for when they are considered controlled?

I would recommend the textbook titled " dental management of the medically compromised patient'. Diabetes is not indicated for antibiotic prophylaxis. However, poorly controlled diabetes tends to have delayed wound healing and lower resistence to oral infection. Post op antibiotics is generally needed.
