Antidepressants for Dental Pain

by albot, Jun 30, 2009 04:37PM
I have had a chronic dental pain(upper molar area) for the last 20 months after a dental procedure. I have tried some non-psychotropic medicines to alleviate the pain. One of them Tramodol helps a bit but has much too strong a sedative effect for it to be practical every day medicine. My oral pain specialist wants to prescribe Pamelor which is an antidepressant. I am not depressed but she says that these medicines can help with pain managemnet. This has me greatly concerened. I am not opposed to medicine but I do not want to tread into the work of psychotic medicines to help with dental pain. Would this medicine be worth trying for a month or so? I am not open to taking this long term. Makes no sense to me as I would rather deal with the pain than be on anti depressants when I am far from depressed. My dentist disagrees with the physicians and my dentist wants to extract or root canal surgery the tooth. I think my dentist is right, but the medicine needs to be exhausted before anymore dental work is done. Thanks. Alex

If the dental pain is not dental origin, tricyclic antidepressant and many other cns acting medications are effective for non-odontogenous dental pain. However, accurate diagnosis is needed. Seeing an endodontist, occlusionist or prosthodontist ,or orofacial pain specialist is advised. The information provided is limited, I can not provide a meaningful differential diagnosis.

General Suggestions
Gravity boots or yoga are better than a chiropracter for putting your spine back inline if thats the problem.  An aspirin sized amount of calcium powder rubbed on the gums will provide very rapid pain control.  Too much at one time will give you headache.  Rinse mouth with warm water with teaspoon salt in it or clean seawater if you can get it.  Oregano tea either cold or hot can take of infection.  Oregano oil is also available.  Chose this before taking antibiotics.  Place a teaspoon of virgin coconut oil in mouth and swish it around as long as possible also good for dental problems, called oil pulling

Don't pull your teeth out or you'll be more sorry.  Abcesses can be relieved with determination.  Blend half a small onion with one stick of celery in a cup of water. Drink slowly, swish around in mouth.  Stop eating and drink fresh green vegetable juices. Eat fresh green cabbage just by itself, and use as wrapper for other greens.
