permanent crown and pain

I had 2 crowns put in 5 weeks ago, since then I have returned 4 times for adjustments and I still cannot chew on that side.  One crown is on top and the other is on the bottom and they do touch each other.  Both are sensitive to touch on the inner portion of the crown. They are sensitive to cold, but not to heat.  I did not have a temporary because the dentist I was seeing made the crowns in house and was able to put them both on the same day.  On my last visit about 1 1/2 weeks ago, I was informed that my bite looked good and there was nothing else that could be done but to see another specialist to check my nerves to see if I need a root canal.  My dentist told me that he did not think it was the nerves and that it the pain should clear up in a couple of days.  Both teeth are tender to me putting gentle pressure on them, as well as I can't even chew bread or cheese on that side.  I was not having any pain or sensitivity in either teeth before the crowns.  Should I see another dentist, wait a little longer to see if symptoms clear, or go ahead and see the specialist about the root canal?

The symptoms you mentioned do not indicate a necessary root canal to me.  You need to find a second opinion from another dentist or a prosthodontist.  I agree with scott, it sounds like its an occlusal problem (your bite is high).

Your problems probably come from occlusal interferrence of new restoration. If your restorative dentist can not  adjust occlusion properly, you may need to see an occlusionist or prosthodontist.
