Brown discoloration forming at base of teeth/gumline - not a coffee/tea/juice drinker or smoker/chewer

As a new mom, I am still adjusting to a complete (but wonderful!) lifestyle change. Therefore, I am still trying to manage everything that needs to get done and lately, I have been skipping brushing most nights altogether. Gross, I know, and growing up I always brushed morning and night religiously. Now, I'm usually too tired and just go straight to bed, and I have noticed a brown discoloration forming on several teeth on my lower front teeth. It seems to be spreading and I have been told I have gingivitis at a previous dentist appt. What is going on?? Help!

Hi,
It sounds like a build up of plaque that has changed to calculus.

You would have to go to the dentist for proper removal.  When gingivitis starts it's because the plaque has started to push down between the gumline and the tooth surface where it becomes very hard and turns to calculus.  More plaque will get into the pocket that forms and it will start to turn yellowish, then brownish and then finally a blackish brown.  It also will start to smell badly.

By that time you would have the start of periodontal disease requiring further treatments.

I urge you to make an appt with your dentist for a thorough cleaning and evaluation.  To wait any longer is just going to start a world of trouble later.

Please make that appt ASAP.  You'll be so glad you did.

Best to you,
Gellia

Hi,
Sounds like a cavity is starting to form under a layer of calculus.  That would be a brown spot.

Please get to a dentist to have this fixed so it doesn't get worse.  There is nothing you can do yourself to get rid of a cavity.

Hope this helps.
Best to you,
Gellia
