Dead/ dying tooth

Hi.  A question on behalf of my mum.  At her last dental visit her dentist told her one of her back teeth were dying.  She has had tooth pain.  The dentist has put her on antibiotics.  The tooth apparently has three roots which are S shaped.  The tooth is largely amalgam.  Is it feasible to do a root canal on an S shaped, dying tooth?
Thank you for your time.

What was the treatment option after pulling the tooth?  You should replace the tooth if you're going to pull it.  That may or may not have had a better prognosis?

The dentist told her that the tooth was dying.  He has put an antibiotic dressing on it and will restore it.  ??
Mum says that it is sore and just wondered about all the treatment.  Mum probably thought that he should have pulled it out.
The prognosis for the tooth didn't sound great.

Its definitely possible as long as the tooth is restorable and has a fair to good prognosis.  What is the dentist's recommendation for the tooth?
