Graph or Bridge?

It all started when my post broke just inside my root (#9).  I elected to have the root removed instead of attempting to remove the post and risk cracking/ breaking my root.  I was evaluated 3 months after the extraction to determine if I had healed enough for an implant.  The doctor used an xray and examied inside my mouth.  He concluded that I would need a bone graph first to receive an implant. This process would take 9 months (5 for the graph to heal and 4 for the implant to heal).  He also mentioned that since the tooth next to it was a crown that it might be better to get a bridge instead.  I'd consider myself in good health and was surprised to hear from him that most times a bone graph is needed.  Waiting 9 months with a flipper is longer than I hoped.  Should I get a second opinion about the bone graph?  If so, what should I expect to see the doctor do to evaluate the condition of my bone?

Hi,
Bone grafts can be an easy thing.  I just had four implants on my top front teeth and each one had a bone graft.  They used what I call "bone in a bottle" or cadaver bone.  As long as you have a good oral surgeon doing your implant, this is no problem.  It worked great for me.
I am now in the healing cap phase of my implants and it has been worth every second!

Try not to worry too much about the bone graft.  Just ask your doctor where they plan on getting the bone.  Some can harvest it from an area that had a tooth removed, too, but bone in a bottle is a very good and safe alternative.

Hope this helps.
Best to you,
Gellia
