I HAVE SEVERE DECAY AND MAJOR DENTAL PROBLEMS FROM BEING ON MEDICATIONS THAT DRY AND ROTT MY TEETH OUT FOR MY CHRONIC PAIN THAT I HAVE TO TAKE! I NEED MAJOR ADVICE AND INFORMATION!!!

Hi,
I have always had great teeth and was diagnosed in 99' with Chronic Interstitial Cystis and Vulvodynia...bascily Pelvic Pain Syndrome. It's Hell! Anyway, since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, my mouth went from being almost perfect to having a deep cavity in every single tooth. I had alreay had a crown in the back and 2 teeth that had root canals that were not crowned yet and just broke off at the gum line and they have been like that since. I only have medicaid and don't have good credit, or money. I am 29 and still live with my parents b/c of the severe chronic pain I live in. I won't date b/c of my teeth. I have had 5 root canals so far and need a few more my endodontist said wed. She suggest that since my teeth are rotting from the gumline I should get all my teeth extracted and get implants. I have had on every single one of my teeth fillings since 05' done over like 3 to 5 times just in a 3 year period. Just with dental work I would need definatly 3 extractions, 3 inplants, 3 inplant crowns and a ton of fillings and over 15 crowns, 3 partials, etc, which would be at least 30,000. I can get a my grandpa who has great credit to sign fot the loan but the endodontist who is well known and my moms ex boss recommended the extraction and inplants and that I have great bone and they can be done in a day. Im scared about how much that all will cost at once, the pain, etc???? Im an scrared and excited. Im scared about the price and even though my grandpa has excellent credit should he still get approved? I am very scrared about the pain b/c I have a ridicoulusly high tolerance for pain medications b/c of my chronic pain illness. It would be cool thought to have perfect straight, white teeth!! Please, HELP! Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

I agree with you 100 percent. I have been on meds for 5 yrs and also have a pain pump implanted. now my teeth are breaking off at the gum line and I was told yesterday all of my teeth had to be pulled.   Broke and no way to pay for this and not sure medicare is going to pay but for sure I know they will not pay to replace them   .  really not sure what to do at this point

I had this exact thing happen and I don't think it's really the doctor that needs to tell the patient, but there is NOTHING on the pharmacy inserts telling a person about this being a possible sided effect.  I have thought about attempting to sue over this.  I had no idea what was going on and I always took excellent care of my teeth.  I didn't have insurance or money at that time. When I finally did get to a dentist in Pa - they told me right away and gave me all of these samples of Biotene.  But they did not do things fast enough with my teeth.  They worked on 1 tooth every 2-3 weeks.  I just do not see how this needs to be paid by  the people who were not told this would happen.  I don't have the money at all right now to pay for anything and I cannot even go for a job interview now.  It is the responsibility of the pharmacies to tell patients in the insert what can happen.  I just talked to a pharmacist in Walmart - just telling him what happened. He kept saying 'wow' - 'wow' - 'you really had an extreme case' From the looks of the people posting these are not extreme cases.  Had I been told - I would have done what was needed because I took care of my teeth. I will not wear dentures. I am surprised that I did not read anyone else talk about a possible lawsuit.  I am going to call one of the attornys who handle medical malpractice.  I am not a person to think of suing every time something goes wrong, but this is extreme to lose almost all my teeth. I do not have many teeth left.  All were affected.

I just found out recently about all those medications I am on that caused severe, rapid decay of my teeth. I am pissed off! Not one doctor told me about this. I never knew that meds that caused dry mouth can do this to your teeth. It's horrible and too late now! I have to get them all extracted and get inplants in. My mom called her ex boss who is now a retired maxial facial /prosdidontist and told her if Shell was my daughter I would have her go to these 2 dotors he recommeded. One's a great oral surgeon and the others a great prostidontist. My mother has been a certified top detal assistant for almost 40 years. She worked with regular dentists, oral surgeons, endodontist, prostidontists, and maxial facial...the only doctor she hasn't worked for is a orthodontist, but she knows how. She went to LSU Dental School and the endondontist she was working for paid for it. She has been to seminars all over the country, even Hawaii for 2 weeks. Of course when she retired right before Hurricane Katrina is when all hell broke lose with my teeth and I didn't have free dentistry. I have a endodontist that I see for free but, the dentist that I went to for free that she worked for moved out tof town after the storm and retired. Her ex boss who is the maxial facial/prostidontist is going to call the oral surgeon and prostdontist and tell him my case and see if i can get a discount or something, b/c my mother is well known in the whole greater New Orleans area. She is now thinking about going back into it now. My mother had freaked out when my teeth immediately went to hell in just a matter of months. She never thought this would happen to her daughter, and I thought it would never happen to me either. I am not just in sever chronic pain with my teeth right now. I joined this website b/c I suffer non-stop with chronic, severe pain from Chonic Interstital Cystis and Chronic Vulvadyia....which is absoulte hell. It's like a cancer you don't die from! Thats how us IC and Vulvadynia pateints desribe it. There's other ways to describe it but its too graphic. People don't understand woman that have it and suffer from it. It's a vicious cycle and now I have to go through this on top of everything else! I mean I could go on and on. I still live in a katrina house, which is basiclly unlivable...but have no choice b/c our insurance Allstate expects us to pay for everthing  and then reiburse us! Ok well I gotta go for now!

Unfortunately Shellbell79 seems to be beyond artificial saliva help. Though for anyone else who is on meds that cause dry mouth (be sure to check 'cause lots do) sugar free gum can help to promote saliva flow, keep water with you at all times and sip frequently, artificial saliva, and making sure you keep your mouth meticulously clean with an Rx of high fluoride toothpaste can all help to keep rampant decay at bay.

As for Shellbell79, my heart goes out to you. Once you can finally get the teeth extracted, bone grafts and implants placed, I think you'll find you're going to feel better just to be out of that chronic pain. You'll also feel better once the infections are gone. Hopefully the endodontist will be able to at least open the absessed teeth and medicate them just to get the pain under control. My patients report little or no pain with implants, and the pain you are currently in is probably worse than any extraction. I've worked as a certified dental assistant for 20 years, and though I've never experienced what you're going through personally, my boss has done all the endo in our office for years, and it's always so difficult to see people in extreme tooth pain. The only good part is that I help make them feel better :)
Best of luck to you, hope things happen quickly.

Did your medical doctor tell you that uristat, pryidium, and urelle cause dry mouth?

Why didn't your doctor tell you to use artifical saliva to deal with you dry mouth?  Drug stores sell artificial saliva.

The implants are great.  They put me to sleep and did it all in a matter of 30 minutes.  Since my implants and partial are in the back, I sometimes don't wear them.  You can't really tell, but I have to wear them because of the upper teeth drifting.  I guess I need to have them adjusted because when I eat with them, things get under the partial just like if I had false teeth.  I am hoping to get it "shave down" some over the Christmas break.  I am really happy with the way my teeth look.  They are a little bigger than my original teeth, and it took me a while to get used to the way I looked, but people who just meet me can't tell the difference.

Hey lady,
Thanks so much! Thats awesome that your pain wasn't that bad! That makes me feel at ease somewhat! It just sounds really painful, ya know! I mean having your teeth extracted and bone marrow put in and then the inplants screwed basicly into your bone and root. Sounds so scarey! I guess also the fact that I need all of them taken out at once and put in. They said I have good bone so, I am hoping I won't have to wear a partial,  which would basicly be dentures for 3 to 6 months and then get the inplants. I am hoping I can do it all at once. I just want it over with! I woke up out of my sleep in severe pain b/c I need another root canal asap. I am having to take the 10mg norcos right now b/c of the severe pain. All my teeth hurt and throb! My endodontist said I need a few more root canals but, it would be a waste to get them b/c Im getting them pulled out anyway. But, I am in severe pain b/c of a cracked one right now and I am also on antibiotics. I am pissed that I am having to take norco after detoxing off the fentanyl patch over 130 days ago. I have TMJ too. How long have you had the inplants? I know you said you haven't gotten use to eating with them. Do they feel like real teeth though? So are all your teeth nice looking now? My aunt has a partial on one front tooth and she has a big lisp from it. It was from and injury from passing out on her face on vaction in new york. She's waiting 2 months to get her inplant.  Anyway, pray that I can get in this week for the root canal and get a appt. and good deal with that doc. who specializes in everything. Oh yeah , by the way, I am 29 and refuse to get dentures!! Hopefully by my 30th bday on June 15th I will have perfect teeth!!!
Thanks again,

I agree!  The pain was very minimal.  I was so scared because of my previous history of pain pills, but I only took 2 lortab 10's through the entire process.  It was totally worth it in the way of look, but I still haven't gotten used to eating on the implants.  I have 4 back teeth on each side on a partial.  My dentist is going to try and shave the "gum" part of the partial down so it won't be so bulky.  Right now it feels like I am gagging all the time.  I have to wear them though because the upper crowns were "drifting" due to not having something to match up to on the bottom.  I have to wear them to keep the TMJ at bay.  The implants did have to wait 3 months before I could get the partial, but there was no pain or problem.  As a matter of fact, I had the implants put in around noon one day and went to the softball games the same night.

The two implants were around $3,000 and then the partial was another $2500.  I really didn't have a choice though.  I refused to get dentures!  Good luck

Thanks, I just wanted to know...after the inplants were put in, did they feel like real teeth? Can you eat normally after? How much were they?

Hi,
Try not to worry about any pain.  I just had four implants after my four front teeth were pulled and I can honestly say the pain was minimal.  I didn't even need pain meds after.
For me the hardest part was the novocaine shots, but once they were over, it was really a pain free procedure that was over quickly.
Good luck with yours and let us know how you do.  Best thing you can do now is focus on the finished product because you will be there soon!
To a happy smile!

Hey lady,
I forgot to thank you for your reply! I am so glad that I found out that I found someone will similar problems as me. I am going to start taking strong does of cal/mag too. That should help with the process. I know mostly when people get inplants they get the extractions and then have to get bone graphs and wait 3 to 6 months with a partial in and then get the inplant and then you have to wait to get the temporary inplant crown. The denstist/endodonist did the new 3/4 d cat scan of my entire mouth and said it will be aa waste of money with the crowns b/c my teeth will still decay. She said since I have good bone that the doc will extract them and put in bone marrow and the inplants all at once and do the temp. too. I'll just have to wait like 3 to 6 months for them to heal and get strong before the permanant inplant crowns. I just hope everything goes well, since he specializes in just doing that and he's well known and personally knows my endodonist who is my moms ex boss. She is going to tell him my case and send all my info and cat scans and hopefully with give me some kind of discount and I hope my grandpa who has excellent credit will get approved for all of it. Im just a nervous wreck and am scrared to go in public. You can't tell my teeth are bad unless you look really closely or if I smile big, cause then you can see the 2 missing teeth on my top side of my mouth and all the other cracked teeth. My front tooth had already cracked 1 month ago and had to get a quick bonding on it. Im just scrared to go out in public b/c you never know when those suckers are going to break off. My bottom teeth are badly decayed at the root. I am hoping to get an appt. with the speciality dentist this week and I have to get my other root canal done b/c I am hurting with it too much, other wise I would just leave it there b/c its going to be pulled out anyway and my endodontist is doing it for free. She say I have a bunch of others, but since their not bothering me, she's not worrying about them. But, all my teeth are very hypersensitve to pain and hurt daily. I can't eat anything hard. It $ucks! I know Ive probalbly repeated myself but, I am venting and scared! Thanks for listening and responding! Good luck with your teeth!

The only way medicaid will pay for dentsitry is if I am pregnant or under 21.  Just last night was trying to eat a small hamburger on the other side of my mouth...which is where the other root canal and crack is and all the sudden I feel a big piece off tooth come of in my food. It was a root canal and build-up from a year ago, which is like 4 teeth from my front teeth. Im supposed to be going to a dentist/maxial facial surgeon/oral surgeon...he's an all in one. All he does is remove teeth and put in permant implants. I wanted to wait ti'll after new years, but my teeth aren't lokking like their holding up. I am literally crying right now. I am about to have a nervous breakdown. I wish I would have know that bladder pills like uristat, pryidium plus, urelle. and visteril ruin your teeth. At least Im now not going to waste 20 grand on dental work that is gonna get pulled out anyway. I know dentures are cheap but sorry I  refuse to have them. I get asked out for dates and can't even go out b/c of my teeth. Can you honestly tell me how the exractions and the inplants feel? I am scared to death but, I will have straight, white  brand new teeth. I wish you could go to the hospital and they could put you out for like 1 or 2 weeks ti'll the the pain goes away. Oh since you have partials, you had to get bone graphs and you have to wait 3 to 6 months to get the implant in?  Oh and how much are your inplants a piece? Thanks so much!

I can definitely relate to what you are going through.  I have a porcelain crown on every tooth in my head.  I also had 2 implants put in that hold a partial in the back on both sides.  My dental problems do not relate to my drug use though.  My teeth started breaking off when I was really young due to a lack of calcium.  My mother’s teeth did the exact same thing.  My work has taken place over the past 10 years, and I would hate to add up how much I have spent over the years.  Just Tuesday I had to have one of the crowns cut off because the post broke and the crown wouldn’t come off.  I had to pay $850 for a new crown, but it is a front tooth and I wanted it to look normal.

I thought Medicaid paid for dental work if it was a necessity?
