I broke my tooth, HELP!!!

I'm glad I didn't delete my account yesterday, because I considered doing just that when I couldn't figure-out how to remove personal information from my profile or that silly, sad-puppy-faced, Yahoo! Avatar from 5 years ago that I'd uploaded as my image. The default is so much cooler than those silly, discontinued characters, a famous trademark of Yahoo!, but I finally figured-out how to get back to the basics.

Anyway, that being said, I'm fully recovered from my sore throat in April, but I broke-off a piece of my tooth on a pecan with an unexpected piece of shell left on it and I don't know what to do. I mean, I'm feeling no pain at the moment, since the only pain it created (a sore tongue) is being alleviated with a piece of wax I stuck in the hole, but it bothers me to know that I may have to go through an expensive procedure in order to once again have 28 normal teeth in my mouth.

I saved the piece that broke-off, which is like 25% of the tooth, and the big filling in the top of it is still intact. So what do you think will be involved in fixing it, and how soon do I need to look into it? I can eat and drink with no problem, except a little rubbing of the tooth against my tongue, but like I said, the tooth itself doesn't really hurt at the moment and I didn't even tell my mom when it happened because I didn't want to spoil her pecan-crushing afternoon in a chair under the shade tree with me. So what should I do about this? Should I call a dentist today, knowing that only the most expensive are there on Friday and only in the morning, or can it wait until next week? I need to get this resolved before my birthday in less than 3 weeks!!! HELP!!!

Hi and welcome. The pc of tooth you saved is of no value. If you have a good pc of tooth left in you gum with not underlying problems, they can put a crown on it. Mostly likely will suggest a root canal while they are at it. The crown is about $750 and the root canal about $500 or so. If its not bothering you, you can wait but not too long as a cavity could develop destroying the part of the tooth you have left.

Thanks for responding! I was able to get my tooth fixed that same day (May 31st), and what they did was rebuild half of my tooth with a composite filling. It felt different, though not painful, for over a week, because it was like having a brand-new tooth, much bigger and smoother than the one I'd had before. The reason it had broken was, in part, because there was a hairline crack beneath the filling, in which there'd been significant decay. So they fixed that tooth for $135, and (knock-on-wood), I think it should be alright now. I did keep the piece of tooth as a souvenir and a reminder not to EVER bite-down on something hard like a pecan again!
