Infection after Dental Filling?

My brother went to the dentist last week to get 3 fillings.    About an hour after he got home he started to feel discomfort in his mouth.      It got so bad that he had to go to the ER.      The ER doctors were not really sure what happend, but they think the Dentist cut his tounge by accident.   The dentist does not think this is so and neither does my brother

4 days later and he has what looks like a whole in his cheek that is all white and his tounge is white.    He went to the ER last night and they put him on an IV.   He has to go back today to meet with an infectious disease doctor.

Anyone ever heard of this type of thing before.    What scares him the most is that no one knows what it is.

The causes may be1. air emboli entrapped in soft tissue during dental procedure.2. allergic reaction to latex gloves or anesthetics. 3. bacterial infection, which is rare during a filling procedure

I forgot to say is that his glands were also swollen.    When he first was at the ER they tought he may have been allergic to something the dentist used.
