Insurance company denies root canal and crown

I recently broke a molar in my lower right quadrant, my dentist is recommending a root canal and a crown.  My insurance company called me today to say it will not be approved because I'm over 21 yrs.  I'm 56 year old female with no other dental issues.  Doctors, what gives with this company?  Is this normal and what can I do about it?  Anyone else who have been through this issue and can offer some insight, I would appreciate your comments.

Thanks

Sounds like your insurance is horrible. Many will only pay a minimum of the crown.
But if you have an infection wow.  I don't understand the age issue ):   I am not a doctor just a very experienced dental patient.    I wish I had insight.  However maybe, just maybe they will count the route canal as medical, not dental.
Some ins. companies are insane. I had to have all my teeth removed surgically a few years ago. At the time I had fair ins.  I am paying it off (the difference with a loan.)
I hope your dentist allows you to  make payments.  Dentists are usually nice people but the insurance co's often pay little or nothing. I would love to hear how far you get! FIGHT (:
