Is it necessary to get wisdom teeth extracted?

by McMew, Oct 30, 2009 12:33AM
I went to an oral surgeon for a consul last December '08 for extractions of severely decayed molars on the bottom.  Upon viewing my x-ray prior to surgery, I was told my wisdom teeth (both upper and lower) need to be extracted ASAP.  Because I hadn't gone for dental work in over 5 years due to my absolute FEAR of the dentist, I opted out of getting the wisdoms extracted same day as molars and figured "I'll wait those out."

I am now experiencing a drawing sensation and itching pain in my lower jaw where the wisdom teeth already appear to have come in slightly (I can only see a little of ONE cusp popping out of the gum on each side).  Nothing's swollen - nothing red or raw looking to indicate, at least, obvious infection.  But I'm no dentist.

Here's the catch: 2 months ago, went to my dentist for a consul regarding bridgework.  He had to send x-rays to my insurance company for the procedure, and I received a copy for whatever reason.  Looking at it, my wisdom teeth appear to be pretty verticle, though a wee-bit against the adjacent molars.  But again - I'm no dentist.

So my question is - is it necessary I get these removed?  Is the pain I'm experiencing NORMAL pain associated with incoming wisdom teeth?  I'm over my fear of the dentist, but not over my fear of being put under.  To get wisdom teeth removed, would a local be sufficient enough?

Many thanks!

Wisdom teeth can be painful while erupting through the gum, but unless they are impacted, there is no reason to have them removed.  Your report shows your wisdom teeth are in an excellent position, which means they can erupt and cause you no problems.  I have all of mine.  I have never heard of itching with erupting wisdom teeth.  Your wisdom teeth are not postioned in a way to affect your dental health, I would leave them alone.  Dentists are always up-selling, even to the point of exaggeration and lying.  You sound bright, and have chosen to do the right thing.  Let your dentist get the money for his new Porsche from somewhere else.

Actually went to my dentist (not the surgeon) this morning about 'em.  He said the exact same as you and re-reviewed my x-rays.  Only reason people opt getting them pulled, even if they are positioned correctly, is usually due to the pain experienced during the eruption process.  The pain I'm experience now, supposedly, shouldn't get any worse.  I can deal, y'know?

Anyway - thanks for your input!  Appreciate your sense of humor as well :")
