My lower left wisdom tooth is infected. I am scheduled to get it extracted in a week from tomorrow. I first went to the dentist three weeks ago and he prescribed me amoxicillin, which I took and the pain and swelling went away. I then went to the oral surgeon a week later for a consultation. He said I had bone loss near the wisdom tooth from the infection, which scared me. He told me to wait to take another dose of amoxicillin until the day before the extraction. My jaw is currently hurting right below the lower left wisdom tooth. Does this mean the infection has returned from the first dose of amoxicillin and if so, am I still ok to wait until a week from tomorrow to have the tooth extracted? The reason I have to wait is because the oral surgeon is only in on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I had important projects I have to get done at work before taking days off. Please let me know if I will be ok or not until next week and if maybe I should take the amoxicillin to prevent the infection from spreading. I truly appreciate your help!!
Amoxicillin + metronidazole may be more effective than amoxicillin alone. After extraction , amoxicillin, metronidazole, Tylenol, and Advil are effective post op pharmacological intervention, which yields minimal post op discomfort.
