allergy to crown causing bad smell??

by wol, Oct 12, 2008 12:46AM
2 years ago i got 6 crowns. within 2 weeks, 1 of them started smelling horribly. right after using mouthwash and brushing, the smell was just as strong. the smell from the floss was unbearable. i didn't return to the dentist due to other health reasons, and it took me 2 years to get back to one. the smell has gotten much worse, nothing gets rid of it. I can taste a rotten taste with food or occasionally just from the crown itself. i smell the rot when i breathe thru my mouth or click my tounge.   when i floss the other caps, they are beginning to have a mild odor reminescent of the evil horrid crown.

went back to dentist, who thinks i am allergic to the nickel used in the metal beneath the porcelain. apparently, most dentists use cheapo metal mixes that contain nickel [the #1 metal people are allergic to] beneath the porcelain crowns. you can also develop a metal allergy over time. i have a bit of gum irritation around that 1 tooth, and was told the smell was coming from a rush of red blood cells and tissue attacking the offending nickel. I'm scheduled for a replacement crown of higher quality.

i've read some other posts, and apparently, as long as the old cap is cut off carefully, the risk of tooth fracture from crown removal is minimal to null.

hopefully this cures my problem, and gives some others suffering from similar symptoms a  new approach to treatment

anyone else have this problem or are suffering from the same symptoms??

does anyone else know anything about this??

the same dentist put on all 6 crowns, made from the same material.. so if i have an allergy to the crown metal, why aren't the other 5 crowns giving me the same problems??? i've done a ton of research and can find where people are allergic to nickel containing crowns, but nothing about the odor related to the allergy.

Bad smell associated with crown generally results from retained debris in stead of allergic response.

I have a crown on one tooth and seem to have the same problem...I don’t have the bad smell but have irritation around the crown and I am allergic to nickel. I also heard that some cheaper crowns use nickel so I am going to the dentist to see if replacing it with a metal free crown will help.  (The dentist replaced it once before because he believed that maybe there was some "debris" or bacteria that got in under the crown. He also guaranteed that it would be fine after that but the problem still persists so it might be an allergic reaction). I found out I was allergic to nickel after I got the crown and when I found out that crowns were made with nickel it just kind of makes sense now, so we will see.
