dental pain

Hi there, i have a fractured lower molar which i had crowned [gold bonded] a week ago, i didnt have root canal, the fitting was very painful as i didnt have LA and the dentist had a hard time getting temp off i e.. a lot of drilling and prodding, the crown was great fit and the bite is good, but i have been experiencing toothache from hot and cold food and drink, also the toothache is waking me from sleep over the last few nights, although not excruciating its enough for me to take painkillers, 1 cuprofen gets rid of pain totally, how long should i give the nerve to settle down? will it settle down?

Sensitivty to heat or cold usally indicates an exposed nerve, which means you may need to have a root canal.  Call your dentist for best information.

i would call my dentist. most of the time heat sensitivity means there is an infection. if the nerve is traumatized it can start to die. then you will need a root canal. if the tooth cracked vertically this tooth could prove to be fatal and the pain could continue even after a root canal and will end up needing to be extracted. you need to go in to see if they can find the source of your pain.
