Sometimes plaque gets below the gumline and the tooth surface where you can't reach with simple brushing and flossing.  Your dentist has the right tools that can reach this plaque, remove it,  and stop the gingivitis.

Waiting for too long (and yes, I mean weeks) and you can slip easily into full blown periodontal disease, which means a loss of bone holding the teeth in.  The plaque harbors bacteria that destroys the bone.

Waiting until Irene goes by won't make too much difference but waiting many weeks, could.
Please just make an appt ASAP.  I'm sure your dentist can help you but it needs to be evaluated.

It is something that has some urgency, but it's not an emergency.  You can certainly wait until it's safe.

Good luck with Irene and do let us know how you make out.
Best to you,
Gellia

Hi,
Sounds like the beginning of gingivitis.  You will need to see a dentist ASAP but until Irene gets by us and you can get an appt, try brushing VERY gently and using floss, again VERY gently.  Then rinse with warm salt water (1/4tsp per 8oz water).

There's not much else you can do until you can get to a dentist for an evaluation.  Please do not put this off.  Gingivitis can lead to a periodontal disease which can cause bone destruction and tooth loss.

Hope this helps.
My best to you,
Gellia
