Dreams

I am having nightmares pretty much every single night that someone is chasing me or is attempting to kill me they never do but I often get stabbed in the dream or shot or choked. I have tried what everyone says no caffeine or sweets or scary movies before I go to bed but it dont work. I am 27 years old. Is there a way to stop these dreams.

Hi,I hope you can help me or should I say my son. I am divorced from a person who physically and emotionally abused me. And maybe my son. (During visitations...which I TRIED to stop. The law said I couldn't though) My son that is now 10 years (at time of separation/divorce he was 2)of age. Has been on several different medications such as Imiprimine (which helped for a couple of years from the age 5 until age 8. He was kept on Imiprimine until 10 years of age but the medicine seemed to no longer be working. Imiprimine was given to him for ADHD,bed wetting and Constant nightmres (constant all night crying, screaming out, moaning, speaking incoherently) At first, I was told this was night terrors. But he does not wake from the dreams and you CAN NOT wake him. Also as I said they are ALL NIGHT long! Then I was finally directed to another doctor. This being at age 10. He now has a learning disability, social problems (no friends), eats constantly, talks constantly, switches subjects constantly while speaking. Still has problems sleeping and getting to sleep. He is constanty angry or crying. And I mean CONSTANTLY UPSET. He is never happy. I have tried everything to make him happy. If he asks for something and I get it for him...He is happy for ten minutes. Then we are back to the crying, angry, upset, hitting, yelling....... My son was then put on medication for anxiety (Zoloft, Paxil and diphenhydramine were given) to these meds he had bad side effects and was immediately taken off (nightmares now included walking in sleep, wetting pants night and day, more anxious, talking and eating even more, hard time waking in morning. This Dr. left the practice. I was directed to another Dr.(a stand in until new Dr arrived) who told me to have a medication reevaluation done. He also stated he thought it maybe Bi-polar illness or schitzophrenia.    ..
Finally new DR states he thinks it is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder only to quickly change his diagnoses to bipolar or schitzophrenia..HE Thinks! My son is then put on wellbutrin. Bad side effects...so he is taken off. Then he is put on Thoridazine 10mg (This had NO effect). When I reported to the Dr. there were no effects (good or bad). The Dr took him off of Thoridazine and put him on Depakote 250mg and Risperdol 25mg. My son then had bad side effects from the Depakote (this was given prior to bed time. He started walking around the house acting VERY strange and crying. As if in a trance???? Also complained of stomach pain. He was taken off the Depakote  As of yesterday 4/12/2000 he is now suppose to start taking Lithium 300mg along with the Risperdol. (which is now his only meds...in case I lost you :)
I AM AT WITS END!!!!! What sanity I had is about gone! I had to quit working to stay up at night with my son and to help teach him. (Which I feel useless at). I want to mention I also have a daughter who is 11 months younger (9 years old) she has NONE of these symptoms except for A.D.D (trouble staying focused). She is doing fine in school now since taking Imiprimine.
I TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS KNOWN ANYONE WITH SYMPTOMS LISTED ABOVE???? WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY SON???? WHAT IS THE RIGHT MEDICINE?
I have medical assistance (ACCESS CARD), since my son is on disability. I can not find doctors who will accept this insurance. I am limited to where I can go for help.
I truly NEED an answer. PLEASE

You need to put your question separate from an existing post or it will not be answered.  The doctors only repsond to the first question in a series.  Good luck.

Dear Julie

Nightmares are long frightening dreams from which people wake up scared. Some people experience frequent nightmares at times of stress and illness. The dream experience or the sleep disturbance resulting from awakening can cause significant impairment in social and occupational functioning. No specific treatment is usually required for nightmare disorder. Medications such as Benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants have been used in some cases. If your nightmares continue to be a problem, I would recommend you to consult a specialist in sleep disorders clinic. Good Luck

Sincerely

HFHS-M.D.
