Celexa, Marijuana + Alcohol (daily)

I need to provide a bit of background information before I ask my question.  I have been smoking marijuana daily for ~4 years.   I also have a kegerater at home, so I drink 1-3 beers/day.
About 1.5 months ago, I went to the doctor for depression (which is not new for me, had it when I was younger as well) and got prescribed celexa.     I have been feeling better with the celexa and half expected my need/desire for MJ to go away (or down) after being on it for a month.   I am smoking just as much, and still drinking the same amount.

Is this in any way a harmful combination?  I have never felt sick/bad when doing them.   Feels "normal."

Thank you

In Scooters case don't you think some of the advice is a bit too extreem for him?
What I mean is that after listening to Scooter I can tell that his Depression is not of a very severe nature.

He still enjoys living life and is a productive person. I think if we were talking about a person with moderate to severe depression then I agree "Stop what your doing or you will get worse."

Do you guys really think scooters condition is at a level where he really needs to change his lifestyle?

In my case.... No I can not drink a couple beers a day and smoke weed. My condition is way too severe and Refractory to allow such things, but this is not me so I'm asking the question "is what he's doing that bad?"

I have several acquaintances who are coccaine/alcohol addicts but still continue to run a corporation, and function with a busy lifestyle. Being active doesn't make what you're doing right or healthy, it will catch up with you.  For someone to say 2-3 beers is okay is irresponsible, because what happens when you are partying and not "keeping count?"  I know because it happened to a friend of mine who was on an anti-depressant, and drank too much, she never woke up again!  She was only 27.  You're headed down a dangerous slope, I agree with whodunnit, time to "man-up" and make a decision regarding your health and life.

I appreciate all the comments guys.   Just as a "reply" to somethings you said..
I do a lot of stuff.  Winter: Snowboarding 2 days a week; shoveling 7
Summer: hike, fish, "nature walks" :), riding bicycles, enjoying nature
I just want to say that yeah, the fact that I am a habitual smoker is probably not great, but I am an active person even with doing that.
Yeah, I can only smoke really good nugs .. nothing but the best is what I get/do now.

Hey mate,

It's really time you made a choice I think.

You've been smoking dope for 4 years and drinking beer at the same time. I don't accept you stick to 1 - 3 a day as that's not how people like you and I drink is it? We binge and that is the risk to you. Beer and dope is an awful combination. I've done both at times, booze for many years and smoke from time to time.

Doing both together is a waste of effect. The booze negates the dope so why do it? If you want to smoke then do it but forget the booze.

Smoking dope is a real problem depending on your age. If you are under about 24 or have been smoking since before that age then you will already have achieved a decrease in your brain and bodily capacity. Once we have finished growing and developing, around 24, then it does not create the havoc it can earlier.

But dope, like many drugs, becomes tolerant so that if you smoke for long periods, 4 years is very long, then you won't be getting much out of it so you'll be smoking much more often and spending much more of your money, or risking jail by growing etc.

How do you think you developed depression? Smoking at a young age is a certain way to get there, as well as possible psychosis too. But if you are smoking every day and for 4 years then you will be doing little else anyway so you will be bored out of your brain and that leads to depression too.

Taking a med can give an initial placebo effect in that we tell ourselves we are doing the right thing, getting treatment and so on.

But in your case that's all you are doing. You have kept everything else the same and something about the way you have been living is responsible for the depression. So you cannot do it all and expect anything but a deeper depression.

You need to decide as I said. Meds, dope or beer. Which is it to be? All three won't work. 2 won't work, choose one. If you want to deal with the depression choose meds and therapy first and then once you are OK think about the others, if you need them.

You are trying to justify continuing your habits and the only person you can convince is you.

I've done what you are doing and it failed big time. I did it a number of times and blamed everyone but me. Eventually I got the message. Gave up grog 9 years ago now, overnight. I do smoke sometimes, but probably at 6 monthly intervals. When it's around I get some and smoke it till it's gone. As we do. But I don't seek it out and it's actually easy to do.

The reasons I smoke now and again are firstly that it gives me an ability to concentrate I once had but have lost and dope restores temporarily and secondly for pain relief. Nothing like the effect I got way back at first of course.

It's time mate, think of your health and make some changes, for life.

1 to 3 beers a day will not cause a problem with your SSRI antidepressant.

Avoid it if you can because alcohol is a depressant, but 1 to 3 beers is such a small amount that I just can't see it causing any major problem.

Now if you were drinking 1/2 a fifth of 100 proof rum everyday, then yes that would cause your antidepressant to not work properly and may cause an adverse interaction of the medication.

As for the MJ, well that is really all a mater of opinion. Some people with depression say it helps, and others say it only worsens matters.

In my case I can't smoke it because it make my anxiety shoot thru the roof.
I have never heard that smoking MJ while taking an SSRI is a deadly combination.

I'm sure there are plenty of people here that smoke MJ and take AD meds, perhaps they can tell you more.
