Conversion Disorder can come and go at any given time. It comes on sudden and can leave just as sudden. However, it generally goes away when the stressors ease up. You can go weeks, months, or years without symptoms. Then something stressful happens and you can start all over again. the symptoms will change from time to time. May go way for good and may come back in a totally different form. Mine is so severe that the Doctor believes I will probably suffer from it my whole life. I already have permanent damage due to the secondary effects. For example, I had such violent seizures that my stomach was shoved up into my chest. Life saving surgery to fix it. My stomach is now paralyzed. This doesn't happen to everyone but I have suffered horribly for 4 years. My joints are trashed. Pseudo Seizures everyday. I am bed ridden most of the time.
Conversion Disorder is caused by a number of things, But generally stressors and trauma. I came from an abusive family and am still being abused by them emotionally. I have a stepson that came to live with us and posed a great deal of stress. My husband and I both lost a brother in their 30's and 40's. I had some so-called friends prove to me that they really were not my friends and they did unspeakable things to me.. All these things happened about the same time. It wasn't any one thing that caused it but many years of stressors and trauma. Usaully people who suffer from this are individuals who feel helpless in defending themselves. In other words, they feel their power is taken away from them. I am aware of an individual who has it who lived in a rural area and was afraid she would never get married. The brain just gets so over loaded that it goes bezerk and starts sending the wrong messages out to the different parts of the body. People with conversion disorder typically are able to withstand a tremendous amout stress for a long period of time but when it has had enough, it has had enough. Then the damage is done. It is generally treated by a Neurologist, Pychiatrist, and a supportive councilor. The biggest thing is to illininate the stressors and lots of quiet time. Because all of the motor sensory parts of our body is involved, it is good to desensitize oneself from certain noises, stressors, etc.
