Paxil, alcohol and ? bi-polar disorderand suicidal thoughts

I have been in a relationship for the past year and a half.  He is a wonderful man, but with many problems.  He left a very unhappy marriage to be with me  Due to manipulations of his ex-wife and possibly facing jail time and his guilt missing his children, who have been poisoned by her, he chose to go back home.  He was petrified of going to jail, and very sad to have had to leave a hppy life with me.  When he left, he stated that if he goes to jail, he would put a bullet in his head and if I didn't take him back after things were resolved, he would put a bullet in his head.  He is presently on paxil for depression and for bi-polar symptoms.  The doctor recently doubled the dosage of paxil to 40mg.  He has drunk up to 1 qt. of vodka, while on the medication, always saying that it helps him deal with his problems and missing his children.  I noticed that after drinking, it only escalates his sadness and I have to reassure him that everything will be ok.  I need to take keys away from him because he wants to drive his vehicle to go see his children.  He has actually blacked out and doesn't remember what he did the night before.  (When he left here, I was angry and told him never to come back)  Now that I have thought about it,  I have written him several e-mails to assure him that I understood what he was doing.    He is not a strong person!  He is the type that wants to make everyone happy but himself.  All aspects of our relationship were great and he talked with me about everything.  In short, we were best friends.  At this point, I am not allowed to see him nor converse with him.
I am very afraid and genuinely worried about the possibility that he will follow through with his statements or do something stupid?
Is there any other action I should take to avoid such desperate actions on his part?  Should I take his words seriously?  Is suicide an effect that he could possibly follow through on due to his meds, drinking, depression, and other issues?
I would greatly appreciate an answer.

Sincerely,

Dear Verona,

Thank you for your advice and prayers.  Unfortunately, due to his situation and his ex-wife -to- be, having put a restraining order on him for her own manipulative reasons, and his facing jail time for breaking it (he wanted to see his kids), he has decided to go back home instead of facing jail.  I am not in a position to help him at this point.  I really fear for his safety because I know he is very unhappy.  All I can do is hope and pray that he is safe and sensible.  He needs all the prayers he can get.

as you have noticed the drinking only makes the depression worse. If he is bi polar he needs to be on and antidepressant and a mood stabilizer and therapy to help him deal with all of the aspects of this illness. you could search around for some programs to help him but he has to be the one to really want the help I would take his suicide threats seriously as men are more likely to go through with it then women. Let him know that you love and wnat to get help for him but he has to be the one to take the steps to get the help. I am keeping you nad him in my prayers. Please keep me posted. If you could possibly get him to come to the forum, we could could help.
