Fluoxetine!

by hippyamy, Oct 05, 2008 05:51AM
I've been on Fluoxetine for 3-4 years now and im 18 years old and i've just been reduced to one tablet a day from two a day and i'm finding im getting really bad sleep pattens =S which is really effecting my mood so much, as im waking up and feeling very low, and im also experiencing some strange spiritual effects *yeah i might sound weird* but it's weird im seeing flashes of colours and thinking im seeing thinks when there not there =/ . Just wondering if anyone else has or is on Fluoxetine and what effects they have had on them?

Thanks

Hi,

Have you gone from 2 a day straight down to 1 a day?  It does sound as if you are experiencing withdrawal.  Prozac (fluoxetine) is one that needs to be withdrawn slowly.  I would suggest only half a tablet less every other day, then every 2 days then every 3 days for at least a couple of weeks before then cutting down a whole tablet down to one and then follow the same pattern.

Suddenly dropping by halving your normal dose after so long on this medication is not good.  Some people are lucky and have no withdrawal symptoms but you could be in for a horrid few weeks if you just cut it like that.

I am not a doctor, obviously, I am only making a suggestion based on how I have had to come off certain SSRI's (including Prozac) over the years.

Slowly and steadily is definitely the best option unless of course you are being reduced because the original dose is in itself causing a problem.

Have a chat with your Dr about this before doing anything else.
