Good question.
In most cases with Bi-polar dissorder the treatment is medication. Unlike uni-polar depression having just talk therapy for Bi-polar seldom works, but it doesn't hurt to do meds and psychological therapy in tandem.
Understand that there are different types of Bi-polar dissorder. Bi-polar 1 Bi-polar 2 and Bi-polar NOS which is short for (Not Otherwise Specified)
It would be up to your Psychiatrist (upon an evaluation visit) to determine what catagory you fall into. Then again you never know because the Psychiatrist may find that you are uni-polar. Hard to say without a professional diagnosis. (IMO you sound Bi-polar)
Drugs used for Bi-polar are many. Lithium being one, Zyprexa being another and other mood stabalizing drugs such as that.
The most common treatment is Lithium Carbonate CR combined with either an SSRI or SNRI antidepressant. Treatment can vary and so can dosage depending on your tolerance for Lithium.
I prefer Lithium myself, but while starting on it you will need to get simple blood work done as your dosage is increased. This is to measure your Lithium blood level. The level in your blood should be no lower that 0.8 and no higher than 1.5
Below 0.8 and Lithium does nothing. Above 1.5 and it can be toxic. This is why Lithium is started at 450Mgs.
Each person is different. I must take 900Mgs a day to stay at a 0.9 (the sweet spot) while I know others that must take as much as 1200Mgs to reach this blood level.
Some only need take 450Mgs a day. Just depends on how fast your kidneys filter the drug.
To combine with Lithium I prefer either an SNRI like Effexor or a neurotenergic drug such as Protriptilyne. They are very energizing antidepressants and they help get my butt moving.
Doc may also add Lamotragine, but that kind of depends on the severity of your condition and the Psych docs preference.
Either way any meds given to you will be titrated. (that just means a slow dosage increase over a few weeks)
That should answer all your questions.
what would the treatment for being bipolar be ?
Don't see an MD doctor. Go see a Psychiatrist.
Without question you sound Bi-polar (I know because I am and all your symptoms are mine too)
Your not going to go crazy or anything, but it will make you feel that way.
When you find a Psychiatrist that gets you on the right meds you should feel back to your old self again so try not to worry.
