I am sorry about your loss.  I have been down that road too....it will get better with time, believe it, or not.  I am also a "happy and chirpy" person that knows how much the remembrance of lost ones hurts so bad.  I have found that a good cry has never hurt anything!  It may be a back and forth thing for years...feeling like you are so alone, then not even consiously thinking about it, but the feeling is rooted inside of you. It is the lonley feeling that hurts me the most.  I hope you have the help you need.  Good Luck!

It is not having a reason that is causing the diagnoses of depression it is your reaction to that reason. 'medical depression' is us having an innappropriate or excessive reaction to that real life reason and why we have to take so long to get over things.
You're friend has just died, that is quite a trauma, but most people can eventually pass that event to the back of their heads and carry on. Depression can turn that event into a trigger for depression as well as grief that simply lasts a lot longer than it should. It is normal to feel bad about a friend dying, but if you are having the symptoms of depression and have had for at least a while then it may have triggered depression.
By the way, I am so sorry about your friend.
If the depression feels real to you it is real. Don't worry too much about the labels that get given out, they really don't mean that much a lot of the time, but you know if you're depressed. If in your heart you think you could be your doctor could be right but be careful and don't let the doctor start giving you any meds or anything unless you have looked them up as a lot of them are nasty. Hope that was helpful....

Doesn't matter what you call it.  I think, though, you're right in your thinking, but also not right.  It depends, really, on how long it lasts and how significantly it interferes with your life.  Grieving is natural, sadness is natural, but depression, even when it does have an origin that can be determined, hangs on and seriously affects one's life and choices.  And you're the best judge of this, you spend a lot more time with yourself than a doctor does.  Docs today are quite fast with the diagnoses and the meds, so you have to do a lot of work yourself on what to do about things.  And if it is depression, a therapist is the first place to go to work on it, not a doctor.
